Re: BBC news now in HD

And that's all you are likely to get, as there are no plans for an HD version of the BBC News channel.

I struggle to see why this channel could not launch on VM, SKY and Freesat, the studio is in HD? Channels that are on Freeview should not bar from launching a HD version on other platforms!

Cause it costs money to launch a channel on Sat/Cable, simple as that.

Re: BBC news now in HD

That would be the BBC's "platform neutral" policy, I imagine. Although, that's a convenient excuse because the BBC is skint.

Even if they had the money for the bandwidth, Freeview doesn't have the bandwidth for the channels. Welcome to the wonderfully short-sighted world of British TV broadcasting. We should have been making plans to standardise on satellite delivery of our FTA TV a decade ago. No mucking about with phased analogue switch-off, no arguing over how many UHF channels can be hawked off to mobile phone companies and, best of all, no compromise on the number of TV channels our public service broadcasters can make available in HD.

Re: BBC news now in HD

Not to turn this into another pointless licence fee debate but you do get rather a lot for your £145. However, you would get rather more if the BBC didn't have to replicate everything on DVB-S, DVB-C and DVB-T.

efficiencies? wasted resources/money on people setting up non futureproof tech or wasting resources/money on people without proper vision like you.

Re: BBC news now in HD

I think the BBC does too much. I've never seen anything compelling that justifies the continued existence of BBC2 and BBCs 3 and 4, for example. 3 and 4 seem to have split what used to be BBC2's remit between them and while that means 3 and 4 both have a very clearly defined audience, I'm no longer certain what BBC2 is for. Yet BBC2 is benefiting from the bandwidth vacated by the closure of BBC-HD while 3 and 4 are not. Nor are the News, CBBC or Cbeebies channels for that matter. And that's another thing ... The broadcast of a channel for school-age children, during term time. What is the point of that? ITV has a far better set up, broadcasting CITV Mini during the day and older CITV stuff in the late afternoon. But then, ITV has to earn its keep. The Beeb can afford to use a scattergun, ensuring that the very few school age kids that are in a position to see the CBBC channel at 11am on a Thursday, can do so.

You could say the same for radio. 1extra, 4extra, Asian Network ... I know the BBC's public sevice remit is to ensure that the niches are covered, but I think some of their output is a bit *too* niche.

If they pared back a little on the breadth, they could do more about the depth, such as (in theory) making progress towards use of HD on their more important channels. Although as I said, the main block on HD is lack of space for it on Freeview and the BBC's reluctance to launch anything that it can't replicate across satellite, cable and terrestrial.

Re: BBC news now in HD

thanks Chris. it just proves its all a bore. i do like programs broadcasted. could they not an entire channel online for live streaming? say CBBC/CBeebies/BBC4. making way for a set up of BBC1HD, BBC2HD, BBCNEWSHD and BBC3HD?

Re: BBC news now in HD

Freeview will have the capacity for more HD soon, that is until HM Government decides to raid Freeview of more spectrum again for 5G. I'm not saying we will never see BBC News go HD, but with the amount of service & property pruning going on at Auntie Beeb it's not happening in the near future.

I'd rather see BBC 3 & 4 go HD than a 24 hour rolling news service
