Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
They've given it to an Argie, that won't go down well with Catholic Falklanders...

How could they not consider the Falklands when choosing a new pope? The mind boggles

The archbishop of Buenos Aires is a Jesuit intellectual who travels by bus and has a practical approach to poverty: when he was appointed a cardinal, Bergoglio persuaded hundreds of Argentinians not to fly to Rome to celebrate with him but instead to give the money they would have spent on plane tickets to the poor. He was a fierce opponent of Argentina's decision to legalise gay marriage in 2010, arguing children need to have the right to be raised and educated by a father and a mother. He was created a cardinal by John Paul II on 21 February 2001.

Re: Pope Benedict Resigns
He's a Jesuit. Can't see how he would have any affinity with the Argentinian government.

I'm ashamed to be Catholic tonight. Who the Hell would vote for someone from the most hated country in the world?

Apparently he lives a relatively modest life I suppose to reflect the jesuits vow of poverty. That's not really synonymous with the fascist apparatus that's been running Argentina for the past however long and the way they treat the poor.

Calm down, dear ... he can't help where he's born. And I don't believe he represents the Argie government. Thankfully. Though no doubt it will suit that harridan in Buenos Aires nicely, to claim some sort of reflected glory or extra legitimacy.

re: [Updated] Pope Benedict Resigns : Cardinal Bergoglio becomes Pope Francis I
Also Argentina is hardly the most hated country in the world. Almost every other country couldn't give a flying toss about the Falklands and even the Latin America governments that do express support for Argentina's claim don't really seem to be willing to get involved in any real political action over it.
---------- Post added at 19:58 ---------- Previous post was at 19:50 ----------
Also does it really matter what nationality the Pope is? Surely he is meant to transcend notions of nationality?
Either way I don't think we'll be seeing the Swiss Guard in the Falklands any time soon. . Besides if he is a problem we'll just start our own church!

Anyhoo, he's not the Bishop of Buenos Aires any more, he's the Bishop of Rome. Good luck to him.

re: [Updated] Pope Benedict Resigns : Cardinal Bergoglio becomes Pope Francis I
my 2 pence
Think what I am hearing he is the right person to be pope at present climate the world face. I think alot are suprised at the choice but for me there was telling point. He lives modest lifestyle and a champion cause for under previlaged. I think it shows a sense sensibilty by the vatican in there choice.
It will be interesting times with pope francis. Apparantly he had big row with arginetine government over gay mariage. Shows he will play hard with establishments.
I think he been brought in to do job. Change way the church works and to influence those outside change there ways.

re: [Updated] Pope Benedict Resigns : Cardinal Bergoglio becomes Pope Francis I
I will be totally honest, although l am not a catholic but a Christian.
I found the the selection of the new Pope, totally gripping and tearful and watched it every time, l was waiting for the white smoke to come from the chimney, but my wife who is catholic wanted to watch Little House etc, and we missed it it.
But we stayed glued to the tv until the new pope was named and shown on TV.
It was awesome and tearful.
