So, why is the VM PVR is called TiVo?

Well, originally, the technology that became TiVo was called Teleworld. As the product neared the completion stages, the company decided to adopt the made-up word TiVo. The T and V are said to be from "television," and the i and o from "in" and "out."

Interesting piece of triva, thanks.

I wonder, in light of today's news, how much longer the tivo name will remain in the uk?

I always presumed it meant television in, video out - seems to describe the product really.

Did you choose your user name after the Liberty Global version of TiVo?

Re: So, why is the VM PVR is called TiVo?

why would any future owners want to get rid of the Tivo? Tivo is the best thing a cable company has done since comtel installed cable down my street and the day 512 went live

Because the new owners will have their own version called Horizon that does not attract TiVo licensing fees.

There are nearly 132,000 threads on this forum. If you come across one that does not take your interest, choose another one instead.

This is more appropriate than viewing the thread, making rude remarks and sending further rude private messages.

Re: So, why is the VM PVR is called TiVo?

so you offset the fees to TiVo by spending a fortune on implementing a new box? I doubt they will change it for a long time

No, you buy yourself out of the TiVo contract and start shipping the Horizon boxes you have stockpiled in Europe.

Re: So, why is the VM PVR is called TiVo?

or Horizon see how superior to their boxes Tivo really is and uses the VM link to adopt TiVo into its ranks

Re: So, why is the VM PVR is called TiVo?

Or perhaps just keep the status quo ( now that would rock the world) .
How easy would be to. Stop using TiVo & start using Horizon instead . I personally do not see it happening any time soon. How ever never say never.

Re: So, why is the VM PVR is called TiVo?

Virgin Media has just spent 2 years telling everyone that TiVo is their amazing new set top box. Off the back of that they've grown their customer base by record figures, so people have bought in to what Virgin Media have been saying. Lets not forget that Virgin Media as a brand is staying. If they suddenly start saying that actually TiVo isn't that great and Horizon is the future they'll instantly lose credibility. It might be that when it's time to launch a new stb we don't get a second generation Virgin TiVo, but the current stb isn't going anywhere just yet.
