special permit to drink and drive in Ireland

Quote:
An Irish council that voted to allow drink-driving has been slammed for dragging the country back to "a darker day"
.

Quote:
Kerry County Council will now ask Justice Minister Alan Shatter to issue licences that would allow people living in remote countryside to drive home from their nearest pub "after having two or three drinks on little-used roads, driving at very low speeds".
Councillor Danny Healy-Rae, the publican who proposed the motion, claimed the move would "greatly benefit" and even prevent suicide and depression among those who felt isolated because of more stringent drink-driving legislation.

Can you believe this

Trying to justify it by saying it will prevent suicides is just ludicrous

Re: special permit to drink and drive in Ireland

I'm sure I suggested this country would do that one day. maybe Ireland read it.

Have you got a licence to be able to drive home drunk?

I better slow down. I might get nicked.

After the few trips i have made to ireland (belfast to dublin) my impression was that quite a large proportion of people live in rural areas .They are going to end up wiping each other out ,still at least they won't be committing suicide
