Re: Speed Upgrade

What cable modem is it you have.
They won't upgrade you if its the wrong type. They will want you to swap Modems...
Modem swaping is a free service...

They will want to give you a Super hub for docsis 3

Re: Speed Upgrade

You are on an old modem, so you'll need a DOCSIS 3 capable device. Which means the venerable Superhub.

Go to your account area on the VM website, in the green box at the top it should have a more info link, click that and you might be told you need a new modem and you can request one there. Otherwise it's a call to 150 and they may even try to stick you with a new 12 month contract just to be lumbered with a worthless lump of plastic, which you can probably avoid by calling retentions instead (150, choose thinking of leaving).

20 is being "doubled" to 60, not 30.

Re: Speed Upgrade

Well phoned up customer services, they are giving me a super hub. Please tell me this are not as bad as some people make them out to be.

Better play nice with my 751U-2HnD Router!

The annoying thing, no matter how hard I tried, they wanted to send an engineer to swap my modem........
I'm a systems administrator with CISCO Networking Experience I'm sure I can handle a modem swap.

Now means I have to wait in, ahhh wells. Being upgraded on 9th

Re: Speed Upgrade

all I'll say is ringup and get it registered and let it download the latest firmware and then put it straight into modem mode

You're likely swapping from an older DOCSIS2 Modem. The reason they insist on an Engineer is because the DOCSIS3 stuff is a lot more picky about the signal levels, which the engineer may need to adjust at the cab (although it's usually just an attenuator). When I worked at virgin, just after the superhub came out and they simply sent them out, quite a few customers would be left with no internet as the SHUB couldn't connect, whereas their older SB2100 or whatever worked just fine - the catch is you can't just "Swap back" once you've activated the new hub.
They'd need a tech to fix it, but they'd be without internet for sometimes over a week until they could get the engineer visit.

If you have your own router you're happy with use it in modem mode. Most people find the SH works fine in modem mode, even if they've had terrible problems in router mode. Aside from size, power consumption, heat, and LED brighness there isn't much wrong with it in modem mode; some people care about those factors more than others mind you.

Spot on advice from Qasi. The SH is very good in modem mode. Trust Qasi to find a list of baddies in modem mode!

As to your 751U-2HnD router, I note that the spec does not list WAN-LAN throughput. But looking at the Router mode throughput data, it would seem that the device can sustain a 60 meg connection, but may struggle with 100 meg (that last point being a loose interpretation of what's listed).

Keep us posted when you get the SH and put it into modem mode.

BTW, you'll go onto the DOCSIS 3 network and there may be different contention levels that you currently find on the DOCSIS 1 network now provided to you.

Re: Speed Upgrade

Is anyone able to explain why the current upgrade date (estimated : April 2013 - June 2013) for my area (Sutton) is a full year later than the original estimate given this time last year? Any chance Virgin might actually meet or better this current estimate?

I did phone Virgin but got no explanation at all. Do you think they might postpone their forthcoming price increases to compensate (fat chance)?

I feel utterly exasperated by the lack of delivery and explanantion.

Re: Speed Upgrade

If you search the forum on terms Sutton or New Malden or Kingston or any of the SW London areas served by the Croydon node, you'll see what a mess that whole region is.

The original estimate, we all reckon, was marketing blather because of BT's speed doubling announcement for Infinity.
