Re: Fatal M6 crash in Staffordshire kills three children
A tragic event, but it showed how the police seem to be more plod than perfect.
Police originally reported "multiple vehicles, multiple fatalities".
Then it was reported as "single vehicle, 2 boys and 1 girl killed, 2 women seriously injured".
Now they say it was 2 boys and 1 woman killed, 2 women seriously injured".

Re: Fatal M6 crash in Staffordshire kills three children
Yes RIP - so poignant at this time of year.
Early reports on occasions like this are often unreliable. Who knows where they came from and whether or not they were reported accurately? The media has a habit of embellishing the reported 'facts' since it makes for 'better' news even when it's a tragedy.

That's because they where reporting on 2 separate fatal accidents within an hour and there was probably some confusion with the press

Two children and a woman have been killed after the car they were travelling in flipped over on the M6 in Staffordshire.
Two boys, aged four and 10, and a 32-year-old woman died in the single-vehicle crash,
It was earlier reported that the three victims were all children.

Earlier on Christmas Day, officers were called to a collision on the B3349 Odiham Road near Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Two people in the car were pronounced dead, while a man, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Apparently, as is all too common on motorways it preliminarily looks to of been a case of undertaking that caused this accident.
This is personally a pet hate of mine, and I myself if traffic in lane 3 is only doing 50mph and I have tonnes of space in front of me in lane 2 I will still reduce my speed to match lane 3 than continue at speed to fill the gap in front.
Unfortunately I find (as a regular motorway user, most drivers refuse to do this and would rather undertake lane 2 or 3 traffic in order to fill the gap infront of them than put the safety of the drivers they are undertaking 1st.
I also see people who are too lazy to overtake and go around somebody in lane 2 who is driving slowly, by moving from lane 1 to 3 and back again to 1 which also results in undertaking.
These are basic road rules and when those rules are disobeyed results in accidents like this and the unfortunate loss of life.
I hope if the culprit survived they will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
It is Christmas Day, possibly the worst day for incidents like this to happen at a time when families should be together.. Especially with children involved.
Unfortunately drivers never seem to learn, and completely disregard to safety of others at times just for the sake of being lazy or negligent and unless the traffic you are undertaking is almost at a standstill is inexcusable, it's basics like that, tied with lack of indication, lack of lane discipline, roundabouts are a good example or poor lane discipline... rather than follow all rhe way around the outside edge some seem to take an "as the crow flies" approach which results in going from outer side, to inner side and back to outer side.. rather than following the outside all the way around and following lane markings.. These things cause most accidents.. But no doubt most will blame this one as with most on speed.
Undertaking is a breach of the Highway Code for a reason!

While this, currently, is speculative, I have to agree the practice of undertaking seems to be increasingly common - and not just at 50mph, I've had people undertake me when I've been doing 75mph in lane 3.
This was when I actually wanted to move to lane 2 to allow another faster vehicle to overtake & have had to delay the manoeuvre because of the undertaker...
Condolences to the families & friends of the victims of this incident, however it happened.

Re: Fatal M6 crash in Staffordshire kills three children
Time will no doubt tell what caused this terrible tragedy but look everyone, don't forget that the people who decide to undertake, tailgate etc. are just better drivers whose 'superior' skills and cars mean they're capable of such manoeuvres without any problems at all. They don't cause accidents and don't need to take account of anyone else on the road, how they wish to drive or indeed the rules.
I had one such 'superior' driver tailgating me very recently. I was doing 30 on a 40 stretch of 'country' road in the heaviest rain I've seen in ages. I'd left plenty of room in front of me and lowered my speed as the heavens opened but was obviously doing something terribly wrong in the eyes of the 'superior' driver behind me...
Another thing I've noticed recently is the habit of some 'superior' drivers who, at traffic lights when there's even a short queue to turn left, will pull into the turn right lane only to accelerate hard and turn left on the red/amber phase. With all these 'superior' drivers around I'm beginning to think I need to take lessons...

Too true mate.
Such a tragic thing to happen at any time of the year but at Christmas time, it seems to make it even more so. R.I.P to all tragically killed.

Seeing their photo seems to make their deaths even more tragic.

Re: Fatal M6 crash in Staffordshire kills three children
Always tragic if it involves kids, doubly so as they were on their way to a wedding.
I'd like that utter waste of oxygen Richard Littlejohn to accompany a traffic car on a shift and see what needs to be done at the site of fatal RTC's. Maybe then he won't moan about roads being closed while investigations go on.
