[UPDATED] Automatic Porn block rejected - opt in chosen instead
Quote:
|
Ministers have rejected plans to automatically block internet access to pornography on all computers, saying the move is not widely supported.
|
Quote:
But the report said an automatic ban - or "opt-in" - approach could lead parents into a "false sense of security" because it could not filter "all potentially harmful content".
It also did not "deal with harms such as bullying, personal abuse, grooming or sexual exploitation which arise from the behaviour of other internet users".
It added: "There is also a risk from 'over-blocking' - preventing access to websites which provide helpful information on sexual health or sexual identity, issues which young people may want information on but find difficult to talk to their parents about.

I've highlighted the reason why i am glad this did not get implemented .

Ok,I'll stop being facetious, however this is only to be commended. You'd think considering the state of the economy there'd be more important matters to attend to....

If these mothers or even parents in general are that concerned about their little darlings having access to porn then maybe they should monitor their own kids better instead of trying to absolve their responsibility onto ISP's or the state

indeed.... unfortunately all too often people in Britain want the state to sort their problems rather than take personal responsibility..... and then complain about the nanny state and high taxes.

Re: [UPDATED] Automatic Porn block to go ahead
Oh how naive of us to think the Government had a spine when the Daily Mail are involved:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...st_read_module
Quote:
Children will be protected by a block on online pornography which parents will have to choose to have lifted, David Cameron vows today.
After weeks of confusion over the Government’s plans to protect youngsters, the Prime Minister makes clear that under the proposals, web filters will be ‘default on’ for houses with children.
|
Now this is confusing. It's it opt-in or opt-out. The Daily Mail's article doesn't seem to understand the difference. Parents can choose to have controls which then have to opt-out of? That's opt-in! They seem to be saying you can opt-in to controls which will then be 'automatically' on unless you opt-out.
I for one welcome such a ban. The amount of sexulisation that is easily accessible by children is sick. Rihanna almost naked? Yup: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...-Barbados.html. Kate Moss? Yup: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...-St-Barts.html. Some naked guy? They've got you covered: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...stick-bra.html. Heidi Klum topless? YUP! : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...al-island.html.
That's literally today's sidebar. Sites like that should certainly be blocked automatically.

also children are only interested one they are going through pubity they get access to sex ed at achool which is something I didnt get.
I lost my cherry very late but my partner who I lost it too didnt know. Guess why?? cuz I had looked a porn mags and read the stories so I had gained certain skills without practice ;-)

It's one thing overriding filters and blocks put on either by software on the computer or at the router level. It's quite another doing the same to filters and blocks placed on the network at the ISP level. It's still possible, and I dare say some kids will be able to do it. You might find some of the proxy and VPN sites also get blocked.

The thing is, when you and I were young, we had to make do with whatever we, or one of our mates got get hold of through the local newsagents. This stuff was relatively tame and we still had the problem of what to do if we were caught by the newsagent (even assuming we could reach the top shelf).
If we were lucky, we could swipe one or two of our dad's more hardcore magazines (assuming he had any) but we still had the risk of getting caught.
Now, kids have free (both as in unmonitored and as in cost) access to hardcore porn, some of which is illegal, and most of which is considerably harder than the stuff you or I had access to.
You can argue all you want, but the fact remains that no one can predict the effect allowing kids free access to all that porn is going to have on society, and I think it will have a massive effect on society, and one I don't necessarily think will be good.
