How do you find out what the line can handle?

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
Yeah its the new SR101 hub. Will probably only use the wireless side for the phone and laptop, everything else will be connected by RJ45. Annoying that this hub only has 3 ports spare after you plug the fibre modem in and I have 4 devices hard wired usually. So will have to get a gigabit switch if I stay using it otherwise will use the other router.
The routers interface is clear and easy to use but nothing there past the basics a router normally gives.

The openreach engineer has a device which he uses to run lots of tests once he has installed the fibre, so he can tell from that the theoretical maximum that can be expected. No way to be 100% sure until he does that and tells you.

Can see what you mean about pages just loading so much faster now Chrysalis. Pretty sure the difference is down to how both isp's handle the multiple connections a browser opens to the same webserver for a single page.

No matter how many times I run the pingtest, I always get the same results, 13ms and 0ms jitter. Lets see what changes peak times bring with it.
Will the DSM/DLM over the next few days change the latency or will it just affect the speed?
|
keep the modem turned on dont disconnect it for any reason.
Then I expect DLM wont change anything, because you have a huge buffer with 90 meg attainable on a 40meg sync. DLM kicks in when the line is struggling not when it has one hand behind its back.
Router on the other hand is fine tho, I have disconnected ppp many times and it has no affect on DLM, DLM only cares about the sync stability not ppp. So you can swap router, play with router settings etc.

here is a screenshot of the modem unlocked showing attainable speed, last night I had 110meg and now its 90meg today. Possibly due to crosstalk from a new install on same copper bundle.

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
Yeah I was going to move the modem to another socket but figured best to leave it a few days. Sky want £10 more a month to upgrade it to the 80 but decided against it. 10Mbps was enough for my needs before so 40 plenty.
Interesting to see the unlocked modem and those stats. Got a feeling I won't bother fiddling that much myself if it all just works.
The only thing I did on the router was to turn off WPS and connect my wireless devices to put their MACS's onto the allowed list and block anything else. Might turn off SSID broadcast and see if my devices have any issues with disconnections.

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
You lucky lot with your spare SNRM. Mine is right on the edge and I swing from 70Mb sync interleved to full sync not interleved every month or two, atm it's the former. Still, it's not slow so can't really complain.

Are you aware of the graphing scripts?
You can log stats 24/7..

and create a snapshot as and when, HLOG and QLN only update on connection but the rest are dynamic, this would show where your attainable went if you have a before and after. If it's not done a full reboot you might still be able to graab a before for the HLOG and QLN...

Also the FEC and CRC errors are reversed in the GUI of the HG612, it's a known bug, on your line interleving is off so it's impossible to have a FEC count because there is no error correction happening

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
Bet its annoying seeing someone who can get 80 decide to stick at 40 lol. Are you a long way from the cabinet?
Just done my first evening ping test, peak time on a friday....
Loving the consistency!
Noticed one line of packet loss on tbb graph, not sure if it was a problem, an effect of the DLM or I did something while tidying up the cables around that time.
Once I have a full 24 hours of tbb graph i'll post both my VM and Sky one together

yes I know the FEC and cRC are backwards in the GUI.
I didnt do any graphs before the attainable dissapeared and I am not about to start resyncing to see if it comes back, I will only do that sort of thing if my actual sync drops below 79999.
It seems the reason BT estimate so low is crosstalk is brutal on VDSL2, potentially with 20 or so lines active in a bundle it can lose 40% or so of speed. However its estimated within 18 months or so vectoring will be rolled out which should cancel out much of the affects of crosstalk.

Amazing what they manage to squeeze out of copper, even at short distances.
Might as well post a section like you. Nothing has been connected to my VM modem all day....you can guess which graph is which

In my experience, exactly the same.

It usually changes latency before speed.

That's colloquially called a JDSU. Your modem will also give you the exact same information.

You'd be surprised. I've seen people with 140 meg attainable on a 80 meg sync still get interleaving switched on.

Quite the opposite, best not leave it a few days. DLM ignores any restarts during the first few days because it knows people are likely to be tweaking/moving/restarting the equipment more than usual.

Mine's gotten fairly similar after 10 months of increasing crosstalk, though I managed to get it to resync during a power cut when pretty much every electronic device in a mile (except the cabinet and my modem, both of which have backup power) was off so zero interference or crosstalk. So far it's stayed up for 2 weeks at full sync despite the SNRM dropping to 3dB. Still, stable at 80Mb sync aint bad for someone who was predicted 53Mb. But the 110Mb attainable without crosstalk gives me hope for 200Mb when 30a + vectoring come out.

Define "long". Attainable rates of ~80-100 are typical at around 300-400m line length assuming little interference, though in my case I'm 90m from the cab and have a line that behaves like a 400m because VM is so crap that takeup on FTTC is huge.

VM's cable is 20 year old copper and can do 5-10Gbps...

You should have seen the state of the cables the openreach engineer was untangling down the man-hole. Ancient would be a word I would use instead of old, so even more surprised at the speeds
One thing that really threw me was the new sky ip address as it starts and end with the same numbers as my VM ip. For a split second thought we had connected things wrong

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
Qas I am interested in where it states DLM ignores restarts the first few days, I have heard exactly the opposite including from technical directors of isp's.
Logically what you say makes some sense as during an install the engineer will do a few recconects during his tests but I merely quoted what I heard of others and isp staff.

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
Those ISP's clearly haven't read BT's own service description

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
ok I take that as DLM is more leniant than usual on the first 24 hours but not completely off.
Thanks for the link.

Re: Just had sky fibre installed
It's basically off unless it detects 1000+ reboots in that time. It ignores everything else.
