Slowness in the Evening

Hi,

I'm on a 20MB service (with an Ambit 255 modem), still awaiting our speed 'doubling' to 60M in SE London (SE9)

For the last week or so, our evening speed has been quite pitiful, around 2MB according to speedtest.net and general web browsing is noticeable slow. During the day (even over the weekend) I was getting the full 20MB.

From what I can see, the modem stats are identical in the evening vs. during the day:

52 | 2012-11-26 14:58:36 | Downstream Receive Power Level | 9.2 dBmV |
| 53 | 2012-11-26 14:58:36 | Downstream SNR | 40.5 dB |
67 | 2012-11-26 20:01:27 | Downstream Receive Power Level | 9.2 dBmV |
| 68 | 2012-11-26 20:01:27 | Downstream SNR | 40.5 dB |

so I'm wondering if this is caused by other users, rather than a 'technical' issue with my connection specifically.

Anyone got any thoughts or experiencing a similar problem?

Re: Slowness in the Evening

You will have to be sent a hub to replace the modem if they are doubling your service.

Likely to be an oversubscribed UBR/downstream issue if it is mostly in the evenings. Doesn't help that you will be on the Croydon area network too, which seems to have its own share of issues too.

Firstly dude you will need a new modem. I think the ambit 255 is only got for ~27mbit. Secondly, your speed sucks atm because your downstream power levels are too high. If it persists it would making a call to get it sorted and while you are there you can see if they want to wang you up to 60mbit and send you a shub. If/when you do get one put it in modem mode and continue to use your current router (providing it can handle the speed)

Re: Slowness in the Evening

Thanks for the replies ... yes, I am expecting a new modem when they actually get round to doubling my speed (was meant to be in June, now they say end Dec). Good to know the superhub supports modem mode. At the time I could have upgraded from 20M to 30M I held back because the superhub couldn't function in modem mode and I really didn't want it as a full router.

No problem with my current router, it's a HP MicroServer

I'll see how it is this week and place a call to support over the weekend if it persists, it seems odd (to me, but I don't get all this cable stuff) that at the same power levels I get full speed during the day.

Otx, afaik I'm on a Lewisham UBR (hostname begins cpc16-lewi14-2-0) and a traceroute takes me through bmly (bromley?) and brnt.

Cheers.

Re: Slowness in the Evening

If you are getting full speed during the day then it is going to be congestion/over subscription which is causing your issues
