STB Software ReBoots

As well as having unknown reboots this week, this morning at 05:47 there was a software reboot, are these reboots normal on the V Box HD?

Re: STB Software ReBoots

Many boxes were deliberately rebooted last night due to some engineering work. Nothing to worry about.

That's good to know, but what if I had been watching or recording something during this, it would have been ruined.

Also the software reboots we know about, what about the unknown reboots?

Our TiVo box has rebooted around 8-10 times over the past week at all times of the day and night. Something not right about that. Has anyone else noticed this?

I suppose you don't mind it happening in the middle of the night while asleep, but when it occurs during the middle of the morning or afternoon it can be annoying. And it has happened to my V Box HD on a number of occasions.

There is always the option to record it when it's repeated.

Well, yes, but if you want improvements to the service, it needs to be done sometime. We do it at the time of day when fewest people are using the service.

That's not good. Make sure nothing is blocking the air vents.

If that doesn't fix it, you should report it to VM.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check that out tonight. It happened earlier in the year and I called them to be told, wait for it, that if I manually reboot it at least once a week, that should stop it booting randomly! I gave them the benefit of the doubt, of course, so I tried a few manual reboots, but still got random boots.

The frustration, if they suggest replacing it, is I'd lose my recordings - can't see them swapping out a hard disk drive.

Yes, you would lose your recordings.

Just curious - is it a Cisco or Samsung box?

It's a TiVo box - do they have different manufacturers?

Yes, look at the badge on the top. (If you can't see the top, what shape lights does it have on the front - round or square?)

I'm at work at the moment, but I recall them being square. We had an early TiVo if that helps too.

That'll be a Cisco. Some of the early ones have a hardware fault that causes random reboots. It will need swapping.

I quite often receive reboots named unknown with a code of (21) as well as the (software) reboots with code (19), and they don't always happen in the middle of the night.

I noticed there was a software reboot (19) this morning at 03:34, was this another required update to the STB?

Thanks for the advice. Engineer arrived this morning and swapped the box out for a Samsung and connected new cables too. I wasn't there, but I'll find out what he said about it tonight.

Gutted at losing quite a lot of recordings, but for the benefit of a stable box, it'll be worth it in the long run. Fingers crossed!
