Re: Uddingston increased to 6 downstream channels

Well had a big outage when I got in from night shift and now I have 5 downstream channels, still 1 upstream. Is 5 channels quite common?

some areas have 4, some have 8, then anything in between

just depends on what virgin think the area needs in terms of shared bandwidth

goes like this on virgin

[bandwidth needed] / 4

Re: Uddingston increased to 6 downstream channels

Guess I need to leech more then :P seriously tho never noticed any problems with the 4 down streams guess my area isn't that heavily utilized. Would rather have seen an increase in the upstream and then get the 10mbit up to follow the 1/10 ratio of dl speed.

I'm still thinking that when FTTC comes I would move away from Virgin but thats OT to this thread.

Would be interesting to see if other UDDI people have had work done, my outage was about 10h today good thing I was zzzz or would been frustrated without any net.

Actually like most ISPs they divide it by more like 30 to 100.

so there isnt confusion here.

if eg. divide by 30 that would be if everyone is using all possible bandwidth at once (unlikely).

Whilst I took craig's comment as that the actual bandwidth needed for what people are using divided by 4 as a joke to justify VMs downstream congestion.

So yes whilst every consumer isp will be providing less bandwidth than 1:1 contention ratio the good ones will try to make it appear as 1:1 and provide enough so isnt any visible congestion. Due to the small size of the shared pipes on VM it isnt viable for them to work on the same model as xDSL isp's.

I see what you did there, explaining my deliberately obscure and ambiguous comment for the benefit of others... tsk!
