Re: The iPhone thread

Apparently this is an ios6 bug. If you really want it to work, go in to Settings and change the date to 2013. We await the fix...

Re: The iPhone thread

I'm not mad keen on the idea of the Apple Maps app, which I have seen some less-than-favourable comments about (inaccurate placing of stuff, roads missing, etc). So far, also, there appears to be no iPad-optimised YouTube app in the app store. At the moment I think I'm better sticking with iOS 5.1, unless iOS 6 offers any dramatic performance improvements on the original iPad. Has anyone put iOS 6 on an iPad 1 yet? How did it work out?

Re: The iPhone thread

Have a road-trip planned in the next few days to work a wrestling show in the north of England and was planning on using the Apple satnav instead of the Copilot that I paid for.

Not so sure now. Especially after reading the Viz Top Tips facebook status just now...

Re: The iPhone thread

I won't be bothering to update my ipad 2 (jailbroken) any time soon. I don't see the point in why people want the latest when the differences aren't that great. If I do update it'll be when it's a lot more tried / tested and updated to work properly. And obviously when there is an untethered jailbreak for it, if it doesn't happen then I'll happily stick with 5.1.

From watching the BBCs report on the maps, it doesn't sound all too good. No streetview either.

Re: The iPhone thread

Apples own map app has already recieved a huge amount of coverage, but for all the wrong reasons. Poor satellite imagery, places being spelled wrong and places missing or in the wrong place.

Anil Dash, a respected blogger and director of technology incubator Expert Labs, slams Apple's new Maps app as being inferior to the Google-powered Maps app in iOS 5 and earlier. "When you buy an iOS 6 device, you get a worse experience for search and no ability to get transit directions out of the box, both of which are significant downgrades from iOS 5," he wrote in a lengthy blog post on Wednesday.

There is a way to sort of get Google maps back.

Go to Safari and visit maps.google.co.uk and click yes to find my location and then from the bar at the top click add to home screen. You will then have a nice little shortcut to the web app

Re: The iPhone thread

Is there any great disadvantage in running Google maps through Safari vs a dedicated app?

Re: The iPhone thread

Other than it needs a data connection and runs a little slower, not really.

OK I get how it works now. I was trying to work out why so many people were hacked off about the Apple maps debacle but didn't realise that you didn't need a data connection for the native application.

Re: The iPhone thread

If you just want to have a look around on the maps, the original Google Maps app didn't need a data connection unless you were looking for a business or more specific information.

Re: The iPhone thread

I know it may seem to be a silly question but as I have a bus pass it can only get worse. On the settings of the iPhone, General, Data Roaming should this be on or off while in the UK?

I have had it in the off position and it does not seem to stop any data getting through as far as I know, so is it needed and does it use more power when on??

When in say over in France I would make sure it is in the off position along with the Cellular data switch.

Re: The iPhone thread

If you have Data Roaming switched off then it means if you go outside the UK you won't use that country's data signal, thereby preventing high data charges.

If like myself you don't go outside the UK then it won't make difference which setting you have it on.
