So what are freeview and Sky's OS based on?
Freeview doesn't define an OS as far as I'm aware so it's dependent on the maker.

YouView and the latest Sky+HD OS both seem to be Linux based. But not sure what they use as the graphics layer

Thanks Ben.
VM must realise their boxes are on the slow side. Any plans afoot to try and quicken them up. I'd prefer a more basic design lay out and a quicker box than the other way round!

To be honest I don't find TiVo slow. Especially not compared to some of the older V boxes (which had a simpler interface) and a couple of Freeview boxes I've used

l have to agree with you as my TiVo works incredibly fast and that was even before the 15.3 update.

Can't agree with you on that, Mobes. The whole point of the TIVO is the features it has to offer.

I agree that it is a bit slow to change channels (that is, it's not instant, but you get a slight pause) but that is only a nuisance if you are a channel hopper. Nothing else is slow on the box that I have noticed, and I find programmes I want to watch through the EPG, which is very fast.

The V+ was slower than the TIVO and I have no regrets at all from changing - I would never want to go back or swap with a Sky box. There's just no comparison.

Honestly disagree with you there. TiVo may not be instantanious at channel changes but its by no means slow.

Also its not up to VM do decided if its slow and speed it up. It is TiVo and no one that uses TiVo a lot really thinks of it as slow or sluggish.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

TiVo update now complete!

http://my.virginmedia.com/customer-n...iVoUpdate.html

We’ve updated your TiVo box to enable these great new features…

Record and Remind

Record and Remind brings reminders to TiVo. And, if you do miss your reminder, you don't miss your show as TiVo will still record it for you.
Your reminder once it has been set will appear when you’re watching live TV, a recording or an On Demand video. Don’t worry if you miss it as you can find it in your recordings in My Shows.
You will also be able to update a planned recording to change it to be a reminder.

Faster access to on demand Movies, shows and Music Videos in Search

It is now possible to just search for On Demand programmes and Music videos, so you can quickly find the movie, show or song that you’re after.
If the programme you want cannot be found then you will be offered the opportunity to Search All TV with the same search text and then results for live TV programmes, actors and directors will appear.
You’ll also find that you’ll need less button presses to play any On demand programmes that you find in TiVo search.

Global settings

If you want to make sure all your recordings start 2 minutes early or keep 20 episodes of every series you can now change your global settings so that all recordings and series links you make pick up the new default recording options you want.
The new defaults will be applied to all recordings going forward but not recordings planned before you made the change.

Other Changes

The changes made to your TiVo box also include improvements to stability and improvements to HDMI connection reliability.

This was from last October but the review on the Gadget show does back up your claims:

Of course there have been updates since then, which have improved the TiVo boxes performance, but I'm sure the SKY+HD box still has the edge in terms of browsing speed and general quickness.

I would point out that the November update (15.2) sped up the TiVo box

Speed increase.
It’s not a huge increase, but menus (especially Flash HD ones) are notably faster than before. Thumbnails on the Discovery Bar seem to cache a little faster and so do the previously very sluggish ones in the Home -> Help & Settings -> Help menu. Jumping from full EPG to Home or vice versa and setting new Series Links is swifter, with the nasty problem where the currently viewed channel jumps from PiP window to fullscreen and back again much less obvious.
And as it also got rid of some of the other issues in the review, it's a shame about the timing really.
