Superhub Happy Superhub User

Superhub arrived Saturday with my increase to 30Mb; set it up it in modem mode to avoid moving cables.

Bit the bullet today, moved cables and Superhub is now in router mode and I have to say it works fine.

Speed wired PC 31.47Mb, iPad 25.94, iPhone 21.06, laptop (not n wireless) 25.07, laptop with n wireless adaptor 32.73

The range isn't as good as with my D-Link router but covers the whole house and most of the garden satisfactorily.

As time passes, I'll see how it goes!

nice to see a happy user. I don't know why you bothered with it though if you already had a wireless router you was happy with

well we'll see whether one is enough. There is another thread running parallel to this one where the user is having to go back to his old modem because the wireless on the shub is pants

don't want to be the creator of doom but you will have problems with it at some point.

I'm due to get a new SH tomorrow, this will be my 3rd inside 18 months.

R30 firmware was far better than R36 I must say.

I've lost count how many times my not-so-super hub reboots itself everyday. Now on my 3rd one with a 8dB 'thing' in line. "It's a balancing act" was the response from the last engineer to visit. WTF?

Cant say I am really having any trouble with my SH then again the engineer put it in modem mode when he installed it and it hasn't been out of it since. My TBB Ping graph is looking slightly better off too.

Sorry to hear you are having problems, but I am still on my first SH (after over a year), and have had no problems (router mode).

I have had one since Feb 2011 with no problems with the SH. I am using it in modem mode because dd-wrt gives me the information I want and I can run DYNDNS on the router instead of my PC.

Since having the SH installed last month, only had 1 problem with it and that was straight after installation. Had to call Virgin and get them to go into the router settings and change some settings as it wasn't connecting wireless and when connected via ethernet cable, speeds were rubbish.

Since they changed those settings, had no need to reboot it to get better speeds, etc. Now I've said I've had no problems with it, it will probably fail later now.

I upgraded to 60 and had to swap out my VMNG300 for a Superhub.

I got put on R36 in the initial mass trial and consider the user interface to be acceptable now - R30 and earlier it just seemed to be a random mess of settings but at least now there is some organisation.

It is still lacking in many basic features - DNS override and DYNDNS support to name just a couple of pretty low end ones but most of theses things can either be worked around or done without. IP reservation is far better now with no need to manually enter MACs and without the constant reboots - talking of which they've even added a reboot option now which is handy if, like me, you've hidden yours away a bit because you don't appreciate Xmas lights all year round and don't want gaffer taped kit on view.

Wireless range is very poor with mine even though I took advantage of having a spare Superhub so I could drill the casing and fit external antenna connectors knowing I could put it back to standard without any tampering being obvious. Being behind my sofa doesn't help it of course but my other routers coped with that just fine.

I've stuck to using it in hub mode with the firewall disabled and 145Mbps WiFi and it hasn't screwed up yet.

The main reasons I haven't gone modem mode are...

I prefer a one box solution.

The alternate routers I could use are not really suitable for 60Mbps - one is old and is probably underpowered and I'm not fond of my DIR655 which I consider to have been a bad buy.

I can put up with the WiFi as I have a Fonera+ which covers most of the places the SH can't reach.

So Happy? Not really but I can put up with it and don't feel inclined to splash the cash I'd need to to get something significantly better

Only if the user feels a need for whatever stats DD-WRT is providing or has a need for dynamic DNS support which can't be provided some other way - I have an IP camera and a NAS box both of which can do this plus of course all the main providers offer PC client software too and in fact that's what I run.

The real show stoppers which are hard to get around on the Superhub if they are needed imo are..

Poor wifi range although there are plenty of extenders so that doesn't rule out hub mode. Simultaneous dual band means extra hardware but again you could run the hub on 5GHz and use a cheap 2.4GHz AP.

No QoS - that pretty much does rule out hub mode if needed.

Comprehensive usage stats that aren't lost by a reboot.

Instability - I don't get this although some people do. I'm not sure putting it in modem mode fixes the problem either.

Obscure incompatibilities with X Boxes, PlayStations, etc. I'm not sure if these still crop up but I expect they do.

I suspect that the SH is indeed good enough for most in hub mode and modem mode should cater for the rest.

I'm living with it in hub mode rather than pleased with it and may eventually have a need for something that will force me into either using my Dir655 again or buying something better.

Minor problem? Today, Internet & wireless OK but couldn't log into SH; power off and back on and fixed it no prob - is this one of "those" problems?

Question, what should my upload speed be on 30M, it's currently 2M ish and I have one upstream channel (8 down) is that correct?

yes. you'll also likely find as time goes on that the wireless will just give up and you'll need to reboot it for that as well - and this can be often. when I was consistently having to restart mine every 3 to 4 days because of this (amongst issues such as the one you describe), I gave in and put it in modem mode, then bought a new router.
