Theresa May to exile British citizens

Recently been following articles about immigration, and was disgusted that she wanted to impose requirements of up to 60k a year on British born citizens who just so happen to fall in love with a foreign national.. Luckily she has only got away with £18,600 but it's still bordering the average wage.. And on top of that she wants to infringe on people's rights to appeal.

So much for them saying they want to be a family friendly government which was in their manifesto that they wanted to be the most family friendly government..

Splitting up families and exciling British citizens to live in other countries because they cannot meet the income requirement is not really on, especially when lots of people are lucky to even have a job right now.. She even admits this is a breach of the European human rights legislation.

They said this new ruling will effect 2/3 of uk citizens who fall in love with a foreign national.. It's like kicking their own citizens into the curb..

Yes immigration needs resolving but is a hard line like this fair?

Especially after her previous immigration blunders like relaxing immigration checks at heathrow last year, and this year blundering the extradition of a national security threat because she "got the dates wrong"

Re: Theresa May to exile British citizens

So she's not actually exiling British citizens then. So the thread title is complete BS. At least we got that sorted out I'm all for debate and discussion but prefer it without hyperbole

No.

I do agree that I don't think this is necessarily the right thing to do but that doesn't make the thread title any less accurate.

Technically the use of my word exile is not incorrect if understood in the correct context and here's why,

"Critics say British citizens will face a choice of exile or splitting up their families, and warned that it would lead to a string of legal challenges under article 8."

Now, how many people are going to split up their family or leave the one they love just to stay in the uk because they don't meet the financial requirement?

So that leaves one choice, voluntary exile abroad, at the hands of Teresa may.. With no hope of being able to return, as if you can't meet the financial requirement while here then it's sure as impossible once you leave the country to live with a partner abroad. So once u have left you can't come back any more.

Also most people assume this immediately only effects Asian, or African partners etc but it doesn't

A white English born person might find love with an Australian, an American, Canadian.. Or even a person from a country inside Europe that is not part of the European union such as some eastern European countries.

Or even
Russia lol

A few years
Ago prior to the joining of the eu it could also of been places like Poland.

But here's the other craveat....

A eu citizen such as a Spanish citizen can settle in the uk, and bring a partner from outside of the uk into the uk under eu law, without challenge.. But a British citizen cannot.

Having just looked-up the words 'exile' and then 'punitive' (look up the former to see why!) I concede your point. However, I still believe it was pejorative and tending towards hyperbole.

But, as I also said, I agree with the principle of your point too
