Surround sound issue
I have:
TV: Sony KL37EX503
BluRay: BDVE370
Virgin: Samsung V+
Connections:V+>>BluRay: HDMI
BluRay>>TV: HDMI
V+>>BluRay:Tosslink (have also tried TV>>BR)
Problem: I can get surround from the BluRay>>TV, but not from V+ (I used to via Audio cables but it stopped working).
I have changed the HDMI override (tried it either way), have changed the TV menu to Audio system, and have used the remote to change the function set.
Any ideas would be gratefully received, even if you just think something is kaput.

Re: Surround sound issue
Have you tried a reset of the V+ ? Ours is sometimes a little quirky.

Re: Surround sound issue
For starters, the HDMI Override needs to be on.
I can't see you are doing anything obviously wrong. I'm a bit confused though. I've looked up the manual for the BDVE370 ( here), and according to that it doesn't have any HDMI inputs. Can you confirm that's the right model?
One possibility is you are watching programmes that simply don't have Dolby audio. To test, the 'Preview' shown when BBC HD is off air is a good place to guarantee getting Dolby. They even show a Dolby testcard periodically.
ps. Welcome to the forum!

Re: Surround sound issue
Thanks for both of those.
1. Definitely BDV-E370 with HDMI
2. I have tried with the Override on and off.
3. I will try a reset
---------- Post added at 20:40 ---------- Previous post was at 20:27 ----------
Pressed the on/off below the Virgin logo and it rebooted.
Checked the override again - on
Checked the audio settings on the TV
No change

Does this rest it though?

Typo: sorry.
Does this reset it?

Re: Surround sound issue
To reset the V+ I would just unplug the mains for a few seconds. Your BDV-E370 is a blu ray home theatre system yes? The link to the user manual suggests that.

Re: Surround sound issue
Yes - Home Theatre.
I have tried both unplugging it, and pressing the standby/on/off button

I found this on AVforums - does this make any difference?
Re: Help me reset and reformat my v+ box
1. Press Home button;
2. Press Play/Pause until E-00 appears;
3. Press TVDrive or V+ button, which ever one you have until E-01 appears;
4. Press channel down four times until HDD4 appears;
5. The disk will be reformatted and the box reset.

Is this a reset to Factory settings, ie losing all recordings etc

Re: Surround sound issue
Your BDV-E370 has one HDMI port correct? If so then it's an output to the TV for playback from the inbuilt blu ray drive etc. The optical connector (toslink) is an input which should be connected to the optical output from your Samsung V+. The HDMI from the V+ should be connected to a different HDMI port on your TV.

Re: Surround sound issue
Yes one port. Thanks I will try changing the HDMI ports, but `her indoors` is watching `The Killing` on catch-up now, so I will have to try later. The fact that it used to work with Audio cables and then stopped makes me confused. Thanks for the help

That reformats the hard drive, but doesn't reset the box to factory settings. It would be a waste of time for you.

Re: Surround sound issue
You're welcome. I'm still slightly confused about your reference to this working via audio cables. The V+ doesn't have phono audio out. You could explain further if you get the chance

If you've really got that port connected to the V+, you've got two outputs connected together. That isn't going to work.
What I think you should have is...
V+ to TV using HDMI
BluRay to TV using HDMI
TV to BluRay using optical.
(I assume the TV has more than one HDMI - Google doesn't find any matches for "KL37EX503" apart from this thread)

Re: Audio cables. I don`t remember when/why, but my first audio connection between the V+ and BluRay was via a Scart lead which also had red and white phono cables which I then connected to the BR red/white. When the sound first packed up on the V+ surround, I assumed it was these cables, so I replaced them with a Toslink, which didn`t work either.

Re: Surround sound issue
I've looked at both manuals and still believe you should connect it as I suggested in post #12.
You would never get 5.1 audio from the SCART. The best it will do is Pro-Logic.
