Petrol tanker drivers' dispute nearing strike deadline

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2...-dispute-unite

Thought this worth new thread as it had useful info about when we could expect a strike. They must anounce it 7 days notice.

So its looks like 20-23rd april unless its called off.

Scot herald by the way said its Friday 5pm

Re: Apparantly tanker union must anounce strike date by 5pm it has to be by 23rd apri

I was thinking about this last night. I don't see how they can call a strike at all now - the Government managed to generate a minor panic without fuel deliveries ever actually stopping. If Red Len calls a stoppage, Cameron will immediately be able to point out that he does so knowing precisely the mayhem it will cause. I don't imagine the tanker drivers will get much sympathy at all, certainly nothing like the general support they had in 2000.

Why didn't you just use the Guardian heading. It makes far more sense?

Petrol tanker drivers' dispute nearing strike deadline is far easier to understand.

Re: Petrol tanker drivers' dispute nearing strike deadline

Further thought - is it possible that the Government has effectively 'vaccinated' the country against a strike, by exposing us to a little short-term mayhem with the result of preventing the complete chaos an actual strike would have caused?

That would have required a considerable amount of thought and cunning. Occam's razor suggests it's just a combination of luck and incompetence

I actually more I think about it. I actually agree currently they in talks so that means they would unlikely call it.

My thinking this what they wanted all along strike action was to get people around table thrash out greviences.

Think they will go away if they dont get a deal or desirable deal they will ballot again.

sorry maggy thanks hugh

break news is has been exptended 1 week so talks can continue can mods alter title. Makes sense to provide leeway.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17706221

Which means we now head to upto 30 april slap back into likely may holiday strike.

Chris I agree but supose they dont want it indefinate of holding country to strike threats by keep hanging it on. Yes we see workers rights eroded for sure.

Yes we dont want to go back to dark days wildcat 24 hour notice strikes. We do need balanced reasoning to strike action.

Re: Petrol tanker drivers' dispute nearing strike deadline

The BBC are reporting there might be a deal over the strike however this little bit still has me thinking there is some form of pay rise involved and i still feel this is what the whole argument as been about.

If this is ONLY about safety and working conditions why are they keeping thing confidential

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17706221

Lets see what happens when the deal is revealed but i still feel this will involve a pay rise of some form.

How so? Do you mean because they would have a full tank of fuel? In which case I don't think so as that fuel would have certainly depleted in the meantime. It may have an effect, if this is what you mean, by causing people to act more rationally as a result of the panic last time....

Or they may "not falling for that one again" run out of fuel and clog all the roads up

No, I meant it would be more difficult for Red Len to call the strike because people would be able to accuse him of deliberately causing chaos. He couldn't exactly claim he didn't realise there would be a panic, and he knows there is absolutely nothing he could say that would prevent the queues from forming.
