Switching between IE & Chrome

I know that I'm missing something obvious, but I'm getting old.
We use chrome as our browser, however I sometimes have to use a program that will only work properly with IE.

The past couple of times I've clicked on the IE tab and then gone into Chrome after I've closed IE, we have been unable to get online. Modem & router working fine, as No2 son still playing online. After shutdown and reboots (router/modem) working OK. So it appears to be a setting within our desktop. Ideas please

I'm using Windows XP, and on 20mb bb (so older modem).

Thanks

It's a work in-house one, that hasn't been configured to work with Chrome yet. so when I need to access it from home, I have to use IE. I'ts been fine in the past, just weird that it's throwing a wobbler now. Thanks.
