iDrive online backup FREE 25GB promotional code
iDrive is a great cloud based online backup, the standard FREE account gives you 5GB of space, however using the promotional code WBD, this will give you 25GB of free backup. You can also make multiple accounts giving you even more backup opportunities.

If you need more - Microsoft's skydrive is 25gb.
I use the 5gb that came with my free iCloud account but no more than that.
I am tempted to start using skydrive more though.

I didn't realise Skydrive was 25GB as i already have an account but never used it!
Does it have an app you can put on the desktop as iDrive is so easy like that.

No it's done via browser (html5) but works ok in IE / Forefox and Pale Moon. Probably more than that but that's the one's I've used it on.
I also have it on my iPhone for uploading / downloading / viewing stuff.

Re: iDrive online backup FREE 25GB promotional code
Anyone considering using a service such as this, please remember that any external service can be shut down at short notice. Whether it's because they go bankrupt or because (as in the case of Megaupload) they are found to be hosting illegal content.
In cases like these, it seems as though the individual consumer has little or no recourse.
Even a reputable, financially sound, company such as Microsoft, Google or Apple can decide to close the service with little or no notice. Although it wasn't strictly speaking a cloud storage service, look at what happened to the users of Google Video.

There is an app, it's part of the Windows Live Essentials pack called Windows Live Mesh. It's good as far as it goes, but it only allows you to upload 5gig, though it is in addition to the main 25gig that you get with the web interface.
They are sorting this mess out as part of Windows 8, and back porting the new app to Vista and 7.

I would do more than compressing them. I would encrypt them first into a container file as I wouldn't trust any of them regarding privacy.

Generate an encrypted container file, put your files in it and store that in the cloud.
