child benefit government plan to implement changes

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-17255753

Despite it being populist move according to treasury spokesman 77% support it. Personally I am in two minds but if the Government willing to accept there needs to be review then why are they not reviewing other contraversial policies which will effect the poorer scale, the disabled of this country.

If they do change it where else will the axe fall to save the government funds. Armed forces, nhs, emergincy services, the unemployed, disabled, low income, motorists.

Re: child benefit government plan to implement changes

Well I think that there should be a reasonable cut off point income for Child Benefit.I always have. However only if it means that child benefit INCREASES for those below the cut off point. In fact I'd like to see a sliding level in increase starting at the lower end of total income.

it is a bit unfair though where a couple can still get it with earnings of around £80,000.

Re: child benefit government plan to implement changes

On the mooted change we'd now lose it as due to a site move I'm currently receiving relocation expenses taking us over the limit. Currently we pay the benefit (or most of it) into our youngun's trust funds so the money is being used "for them".

Much better if they looked at combined income and a higher threshold so we don't have families with one earner just over the limit having nowt and two earners each just below still receiving.

There does need to be a review of this and other parts of the civil service and state provision though.

Couldn't that be seen as you don't really need it. if you're able to put it into a bank account sort of thing?

Presumably, expenses don't count towards your salary so shouldn't take you over the limit?

Re: child benefit government plan to implement changes

It's a welfare benefit, one that should be means-tested AFAIC, and also limited to how many kids it's used to help support.

Re: child benefit government plan to implement changes

This is one benefit that does need to be seriously looked at as i have always thought it was ridiculous that someone earning very large amounts still got it. Case in point is my half brother i don't know exactly what he earnt last year but were talking high six figures if not seven figures and upto a couple of years ago he was getting child benefit he just used it as part of their pocket money each week as like he said he spends more on a bottle of wine then that benefit in total and his kids never wanted for anything they didn't need or want it. There are benefits that need to be looked at and reformed and there are some that shouldn't be reformed as much as they are but thats the thing with this government they never seem to hit the right note on the right songs.

Re: child benefit government plan to implement changes

As long as the high earners are okay...

It's sad the amount of publicity this gets for the high earners that don't even need the cash, yet you hear next to nothing when it comes to the disabled and their cuts. Seems it's still one rule for them and.....

Re: child benefit government plan to implement changes

What the government should do is stop paying benefits to MPs, before considering stopping for people that need the benefit.

I read an article in a paper yesterday, that a Tory has made a claim from US for 50p. How pathetic is that.

I know that people say that l moan, But this is what Cameron Utd like to do, make the poorer worse off, but the rich richer.

Re: child benefit government plan to implement changes

It's an emotive issue.

Stop calling it 'child benefit', make it an element of general low income earners tax credit/benefit.

Low earning households with children under age X are entitled to a higher rate of benefit.

Families who are on the higher rate of income tax don't qualify for ANY benefit.

There are always going to be 'cliff edges' where benefits disappear on an income threshold.

Perhaps it needs to be phased in, but the tax system in this country is far too complex.
