Bolton defender Gary Cahill is in London for a medical at Chelsea on Saturday, BBC Sport understands.

It is believed the England centre-back has already agreed personal terms.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas had earlier said he was confident the deal, reportedly worth about £7m, would be completed "this week".

Jermain Defoe's agent has told Tottenham Hotspur that the striker wants to move in this transfer window because he is not in Harry Redknapp's first team. The manager revealed that Daniel Levy, the chairman, has been contacted by Defoe's representative to discuss the future of the England international, who wants to play regularly before this summer's European Championship.

"Daniel spoke to his agent who said he is not happy because he wants to play and he has got a few clubs in for him," Redknapp said. "I am sure he has got a few clubs in for him but we are not selling him. He is saying this club wants him and that club wants him – that is how they make their money. He is not moving anywhere, though. He is on contract here and is a big player for us."

QPR have agreed a fee with west London rivals Chelsea for Brazilian defender Alex, BBC Sport understands.

The 29-year-old centre-half was the subject of a bid from an unnamed Premier League club - thought to be QPR - earlier this week.

Chelsea rejected the offer but are keen to recoup a fee for a player who has been told he has no future at the club after handing in a transfer request.

Alex is expected to begin talks with QPR next week.

I've got both matches on and there ain't no way Liverpool look like scoring it's a dire match.

Awful performance but no surprise that Howard Webb was quite happy to let Shawcross and Huth et al get up to their usual tricks. Stonewall penalty not given and a couple of borderline ones completely ignored. Got the dogs abuse he deserved so maybe that's why! Woodgate should have been off in the first half.

Only saving grace was we didn't have to go down to Stoke to watch that sort of thing this time around.

The trouble is we are still reliant on one or two players scoring our goals all the time where the other teams seem to have many players who can chip in here or there with goals.

There's a lack of fluidity in the final third and a complete lack of ability to open defences up perhaps with the exception of Suarez, Maxi, Bellers and Gerrard when he's playing since they're really the only players we have who are capable of intelligent movement off the ball. You need 10 outfield players who can pass and move but today we only had 2 on the pitch.
