Source ? At the maxmium they have capacity for 344 channels if you include the additional 44 HD channels they will have the capacity for.
I think cable can cope with way more than 344 channels hence the reason they were turning off analogue.

They will sacrifice a few HD channels to get other SD channels.

2 MPEG2 HD channels are carried on one stream and 8 SD TV channels can be carried on one stream.

Also when Virgin Media switch HD channels to MPEG4 after everyone has migrated to tivo in 4 or 5 years time. That will free up space for more channels.

It all depends on how many HD channels are broadcasting in 2 years time. They might not even be 80 HD channels in 2 years. They could use some of the bandwith which can not be used because they is not 80 HD channels in 2 years time for some more SD channels.

They will make space by not having the minority channels that you want.

i would say the only advantage sky now have is the few missing HD channels they don't allow on virgin.

The Tivo box is streets ahead.
Glad to hear it, my TiVo arrives on the 22nd November!

In my view, the only real reason/benefit to Sky having so many +1 channels is because it helps the Sky+ box as it only has two tuners. Having time shifted channels makes it easier to avoid recording clashes at peak times (for those that don't use the basic search facility and record stuff late at night/early hours).

With 3/4 tuners and on demand for the main channels this isn't an issue with Virgin. Well, I hope not, guess I'll soon find out!

And I repeat, the majority of these "minority channels" are available if you keep your Sky box (which is yours after all).

Can someone stop this merry-go-round please, I want to get off!

Mr. Berkett expects all of Virgin Media's cable customers to be on TiVo over the next four or five years

Today's news continues Virgin's big push for TiVo and also marks the online ordering death of V+ HD. The legacy PVR is now no longer available to order from Virgin's website. It was going to happen sooner or later, and its an important step towards Virgin's long-term plan to get all of their TV customers on MPEG 4 compatible hardware, which would mean reduced bandwidth usage for linear HD channels and hopefully, more HD channels.

Go build yourself a Media Center PC, you can build yourself one with 24 tuners (8 DVB-S2, 8 DVB-T2, 8 DVB-C). Then you can record Argos TV all you like.
