Government have intervened:

I suspect that's what Qantas were playing for.

I'm quite sure it is. The tribunal has ordered Qantas to resume flying but at the same time it has banned the unions from continuing their strikes.

Short term the Government had no choice. It was costing the economy far too much on a daily basis.
Long term Qantas hold all the cards. They've already got subsidiaries with lower operating costs, i.e. cheap labour, in other parts of Asia

Hmm must have been the trade union activism line that confused me into thinking you were refering to the union, must pay more attention in future.

Re: Qantas Grounds Fleet Amid Row With Unions
I'm sure the dispute has nothing to do with the Chief Executive of Qantas getting a 70% pay rise on Friday. Funny that there is always lots of money around for executives and directors, yet when it comes to ordinary workers the cupboard is always empty.

thats what makes you angry dont mater where in the world too many troughing the riches.
Nobody begrudges higher wage but they should be more considerate to what there actions do to poor workers. If they want give 70% increase it should be for everyone.
Seems top earners not satisfied that there 3% is still higher pay increase than shop floor they now think they should get 63% better. example £100 3% is £3 £1,000 its £300. Personally should do away with % give straight increase.
No wonder world in mess while all these think they can justify shocking increases yet think workers should be part of austerity messures them immune. No not all nasty thiefs there some out there who realise that its not prudent management.
Maybe if Companies cant self regulate then rules should put in place to stop flucturating pay rises but every country has to follow.

Actually 3% on £1,000 is £30.

I just thinking why they cant be satisfied that everyone gets 3% pay increase across everyone as they still get more. They still hold there superority pay it dont close it drips wider.
Sadly bosses like to give foot soldiers 3% but help themselves to 70% under current climate is grossly wrong. Would argue its very wrong anyway think this gone on for long time this getting out of hand.
Even with % increase across there would been natural bigger dive in pay system gap widen but escelated in the last few years. Its come to head at some point the bubble will burst think we not far off that greed caused.
Then you get excuse we have to pay them that much else brain drain same excuse councils give whopping 150k pay it snowballs dont see end to the situation. In meantime workers low income get squeezed because governments blame them want to tax the life out in non direct tax which dont hurt the guilty. No doubt scared to hurt real culprits. Viscous circus plays out till finally economy completely colapses from cesspool of greed. To trough more companies out source to third world hoping maximise profits.

Re: Qantas Grounds Fleet Amid Row With Unions
Strange, my teams (and those of other senior managers/directors in our organisation, totalling approx 3,000 employees) last three annual pay rises were 4%, 2.5%, and 0.5% (and over two thirds also got in grade annual rises as well) - I, and my other senior colleagues, took nothing.
The moral of that anecdote is that blanket statements aren't always accurate.

Well we wouldn't want facts obscuring the 'them and us' debate would we?
Ps I've had whip-round and am pm'ing you a 75% rise immediately.

Re: Qantas Grounds Fleet Amid Row With Unions
Osem, I am not complaining - we agreed to a pay freeze because hard times are around.
If I was too unhappy with it, I would move - but on the balance (work/life), I can manage.....
