How do you transfer settings, music etc?

When my current mobile contract ends, will I be given the opportunity to upgrade to a new phone, and if so, how do I transfer all contacts, settings, music etc as I would hate to have to put it all in again. Is all the info stored on the memory card?

It completely depends on what phone you have and what phone you move to.

That's an Android, so I'm out of my depth. There must be some help pages on google's site telling you how to do this, surely?
