If he wants to tell me that I use a script and answer the wrong post then I will quite rightly call him a fool.

I also take it that you have actually read my signature below and realise this is not an official Virgin Media forum.

I also read this ...

If you care to identify yourself as a Virgin staff member then imo you should conduct yourself with a little more diplomacy. FWIW I've never found clearing a browser cache has ever improved anything at all but of course ymmv.

Anyhow as you yourself admit it is irrelevant to my complaint which is service oversubscription and an engineer who takes it upon himself to fiddle with working connections just to make his current job easier - my guess is that he was missing a splitter or maybe the correct attenuator to connect his current job up properly so instead of getting the part he needed he decided to screw around with mine instead.

I am recognised as a Virgin Media staff member by the team on here but that does not mean that I have to knuckle my forehead to every jumped clown that likes to make snide remarks at every opportunity.

As my comments in these instances are my own as below it has nothing to do with my employer and if you cannot get your head around that then that is your problem not mine.

As failing to clear the Cache is a quite a common problem and one that strangely enough customers call in with what they think is a slow speeds issue but once it is cleared their slow browsing goes back to normal.

Now I do not care if you have never come across it before as it does happen and we get the calls.

You could have always tried looking yourself as per this LINK.

Re: Why VM get criticised

I have certainly heard of it. It's just that it never makes any difference to mine when I've tried it. Mostly I've heard of it when people complain they got some script monkey from an ISP whose only suggestion to fix their problems was to clear the browser cache.

Re: Why VM get criticised

So you are saying no tech support at VM uses scripts masque. [OFF TOPIC]

Also thanks for treating me like a dummy posting a link as if I dont know how to clear the cache, but whats more amusing is that specific link gives reasons for clearing the cache, performance is not listed as a reason.

I have stated many many times that we in the UK do not use scripts as it is impossible to do our job as the are to many variables but possibly you have missed or not even read those posts, now if you have proof to the contrary why not post it, but of course the is no proof is the as it is just an imagined fact.

You did read that the cache remembers previous pages to try and speed up your browsing and that it is recommended to clear it at least quarterly as it may become corrupt and slow you down and that it will improve browsing speeds overall, but if you are computer savvy then realistically you should already know this without the need for it to be pointed out to you.

Re: Why VM get criticised

I've been using a computer since I left school. I've worked as a sysadmin for a number of companies, cutting my teeth on an old Xenix system.

Thats over 20 years of experience, and I have to admit, that I have never heard of clearing a browser cache to improve performance before. Usually it has a slightly opposite effect, because as you said, it is where it stores frequently accessed files.

There are many many valid reasons for clearing a browser cache, and yes, I too recommend it is cleared as part of a general computer "cleanup" regularly. However, network performance has never been one of the reasons.

I cannot see how a corrupt file would cause slow browsing. If the browser detects a corrupt file, it will just re-download it as part of the normal process. Once detected the corrupt file, it would purge the file (in theory anyway).

I will accept that clearing the cache may improve speeds for some people, although I cannot understand how or why.

Just activate the setting that clears your browser cache when you close the browser.
