Small Business Server 2011 and Symantec Endpoint V11

Hi,

I currently have a SBS 2011 Server which i am using to host my own exchange and server files etc around my network.

Before today i had been running it without any antivirus but had the firewall enabled, all was sweet and worked perfectly.

I decided however that it was a better idea to have some kind of antivirus on it as that is where i download everything to.

A friend of my kindly gave me a copy of Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 which i installed the management console on the server and that pushed the client out to all machines, however since installing i am unable to stuf the net.

When i try to go to a webpage i get a DNS error saying it was unreachable. (Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.)

I am pulling my hair out trying to fix this. From what i can see i have setup the ports correctly and open them all for the DNS etc. I have also stopped the windows firewall but nothing!

Anyone have any ideas on what could be causing the problem!

Cheers

Have you checked IPCONFIG /ALL to see if the DNS servers are there and set up? If on auto try setting them manually

Re: Small Business Server 2011 and Symantec Endpoint V11

Yeah they are all set.

I have removed the program and it still wont work.

I launched NSLookup and i get an error saying the DNS did not respond, however when i go into the system manager it is running. Checking the event log also confirms that it is working correctly!

Have checked everything it is as if something is blocking access to the DNS

Re: Small Business Server 2011 and Symantec Endpoint V11

Did the antivirus system show up as claiming to be compatible with SBS 2011? The problem for A/V stuff in particular is that SBS runs so much stuff integrated in one box which wouldn't normally integrate.

It does seem as though somehow the Symantec stuff has changed or added a firewall type port somewhere. Tracking that down will not be fun

Re: Small Business Server 2011 and Symantec Endpoint V11

When i installed it it never came up with any errors saying that it would be a problem!

I think i may have to start again! Luckily i have the email etc on different physical drive so i should just be able to unmount them and then re mount when i have done the install!

Cheeers

Re: Small Business Server 2011 and Symantec Endpoint V11

I've had Panda and Avast distributable systems runing on a SBS 2003 server system. Neither gave any messages good or bad when the a/v itself installed from the auto system to the server itself. Only way I could see it was even running was in the consoles of the a/v distribution server.

The problem is that a/v to work effectively embeds itself at a very low level in the operating system. Put SBS with it's host of functions into that and you have a qute eclectic mix.

I don't know what experience you have with SBS, mine is only on 2000 & 2003. But I find that during any reinstall, all sort's of file access permission issues can get overwritten. Make sure that you have a copy of the mailbox files. I'd also recommend you run the exmerge utility to create a true copy of each mailbox as individual files that you can later restore indivudually if you find the complete files won't occur.
