Installation Muck up?

My next door neighbour had cable installed today, but i have picked up on a mistake that any proper installer should never have made. The neighbours WiFi channel was set on channel 1, this happens to be the same one i was using at that time & the previous 6 years constantly. I have been informed by tech support that the installers are not qualified to change WiFi channels, if this is the case then they can't do their jobs properly & need to be trained.
Tech support also tell me that the hubs are set to automatically chose a channel, in which case the hubs have a bad fault in the wifi system.
The hubs need to be fixed so they pick the best available channel, any idiot knows that will not be the same channel as your neighbour.
Appologies for the rant but somethings need to be addressed.

R30 firmware is currently being tested and should be rolled out soon so your neighbours SuperHub should sort it out when his SH receives it.

I very much doubt a tech has done too much to your neighbours SuperHub. The max they would do is check power levels/connection and a simple speedtest. Unless your neighbour has told you he toyed with the settings on wireless... he hasn't.

Another thing is number 1 may be used by yourself but you don't own it. I've been annoyed to find new routers etc. use the same number as me but you just have to go with it. Not everyone is clued up enough to figure this sort of thing out. If you have a major issue with it then go have a chat with your neighbour. If you really are vexed then move onto 5GHz, not many people use it and you should be isolated.

I know i don't own it but 2 people in close proximity on the same channel renders the signal pretty lame, i have switched channel to an empty one now.

I use a program called inSSider which will let you see what channels are being used . installers do not change any settings on the hubs most of the time they are on ch6 this seems to be popular with them

I got an app on my phone that i use, its helpful in picking out the best channels to use. The main reason i am annoyed that my neighbour was put on the same channel is it was kicking my phone off the wifi when i am in my living room, this is because i am then closer to her wifi this then costs me money as my phone then uses its data connection.

Strictly speaking your supposed to "ideally" have a separation of 6 channels between a neighbouring network but thats becoming more impossible due to the increase of wireless routers in most areas.

But as long as you use a different channel number, it will make a difference as your signal wont be effected as easily by interference... and inSSider helps with thise.. on my superhub here, i found the only channel that isnt being used in the local vicinity.

as said also, can move up to 5GHz, that will also give a signal range increase as the frequency is higher it penetrates walls and floors / ceilings easier.

That seems rather suprising and suggests that your phone isnt configured correctly or isnt capable of being.

Can you configure it say to have a fixed IP address on your network?

Sounds like you have a crap phone there .. we have 16 wireless networks in work, all within a few feet and all running off VM supplied customer kit .. they all work and my phone has never complained..

I can configure my phone fine there are loads of wireless networks round by me its just in my living room the wifi signal from the neighbours wifi is stroger than mine, it was wiping my signal out as its only just behind the wall. I have switched to the only empty channel round by me & will now be setting up my old router to the same channel, this router will then use up all remaining bandwidth on the same channel.
The bonus with that is no one within 3 to 4 houses from me will find that channel any good for them, i keep my system running 24/7.
My original gripe was VM setting up a neighbour on the same channel not good practice & bad for customers, they should do as sky & some of the other providers do & set people up properly.

Epic fail, you have no rights to channel 1 and it's not the installers reasonability to check other wifi networks either.

How come other providers do check then, i still think VM are not doing their part properly by not ensuring neighbouring properties are not using the same WiFi channel.
Most people who have an installation done don't have a clue about setting up routers, VM are shirking their resposibility by supplying people with routers & not setting them up properly.
There is also the security point of view with peoples BB being open to being used by other people, think how you would feel if for instance you brought a car & it wasn't set up correctly.
VM are also leaving themselves open if for instance someones BB was abused & it was used for downloading child porn by someone outside the household, after all the kit is supplied as part of your BB package & therefore should be set up correctly by VM

The routers do come with WPS security which is unique to the router.

Would you like them to shine your shoes, unblock your drains and mow your lawn whilst they're there??

Most DSL ISP routers are sent out without an engineer and it's upto the recipients to configure how they want it. Why should VM be any different with their cable.. they set up their side (which you can't do) then leave you to set up your own side including any wifi config.
