Fast-forward speed on VOD

TECHNICAL COMING SOON QUESTION

Is there any chance the ability to fast forward x2, x6, x12, x32 will come to VOD stuff and not just stuff I've recorded COMING SOON to VM????

I've often wonderd why we can do it on 1 and not the other... anyone wish to enlighten me???

Surely this should be in its own thread? But anyway...

Trick play on VOD works by replacing the real-time stream with a pre-created "fast-forward" or "rewind" stream. Currently VM only have one trick-play stream in each direction (6x), but there is no technical reason why other speed streams couldn't be created too. The STB software would also need updating to step between the various speeds.

Trick-play on a PVR works either by reading and decoding the data faster (usually only for 2x forward), or skipping between blocks on the disc. Different size skips give different speeds.

Well it isn't coming soon! Plus with TiVo's skip-to-tick, there is less need for a faster fast-forward.

Well I wish it would come soon... the fast forwarding is much better than the skipping.

Re: Fast-forward speed on VOD

I remember when Telewest launched VOD, 2 speed FFWD was talked about (internally), but never came about.
