Re: 50mb Broadband - Post Your Speed & Vote
I've said so before and will say so again... Speedtest.net's ping results are always way off.

Can you post a speedtest result from windows IE please?
I personally use FireFox 7 and Safari occasionally.
IE is way too buggy and not stable enough.
I doubt it's misread. My friends on Xbox Live/PSN from other countries always comment how my connection is super low latency when i host...
I also always have the lowest pings on PC games such as CoD.

Ok Cool, look forward to seeing what speeds you get off IE (when are you installing Win7?).
This is from Safari (Previous one was FireFox 7) :
I guess too the Manchrester server off peak I can achieve ping time in Micro-Seconds, hence the 0ms ?

Nah the latency is wrong for whatever reason, probably browser related and best ignored.

Firefox 7 doesn't exist?
Also they are definitely misreads
Do a trace-route to google and put a screenshot on here (harder to tamper with results LOL)

FireFox 7 does exist, its called "Nightly"
They are not mis-reads.
I have been running speedtests to these servers since I have BT all those years ago and then Sky and Then Be*.
I can truely say they have been getting lower and lower as I have been moving to better suppliers.
Then when i went to Virgin in Feb 2008 they were at the lowest which you can see now.
Also my mate who lives 2 houses down (50 Mb) gets the same while my friend around a mile away gets just slightly higher (he is on 10 Mb).
Like I Said I always ping around 3 - 15ms on Call Of Duty and when I host on XBL and PSN even Americans say its extremely smooth.....
And I ping really low to pretty much every server in the world, I dont see how it can be "misread" as its a very simple and basic test plus backed up by me pinging servers for gaming and other peoples opinions while on my connection....

0 ms is most definitely a misread.

Like I said, Off-Peak, its possible to have latency in the MircoSeconds when the server is pretty much in your back garden.
I Have seen a few 0ms results when the server is within 50 miles.
Mostly from Sweden.
I dont see how its misread, or else everyone else would get misread reading...

As you can see, almost 6pm, very busy period:

|
The speed of light, 299 792 458 M/s, the distance to the manchester server for you is around 50 miles or 80467M
80 467 / 299 792 458 = 0.00026840902
Aka. 2 milliseconds. meaning in an ideal world with absolutely no overheads or delays on the non fibre optic side of the cable network or delays on the network cards e.t.c you'd be able to get 2.6 ms latency to the server.

The server could be much closer.
I live almost next to the City Centre, most likely where the server is?
Or based around the Uni of Manchester which I know has a very powerful Inertnet Conection which also supplies a few collages.
Your looking at around 2 - 5 miles then....
Ive just looked on google and the company is 5.1 miles away....
So im guessing, doing the maths again means its 2 micro seconds or 0.2 ms ?
Which would explain why its "0ms" as speedtest rounds it down....

Well believe what you wish I guess. I just know without a doubt it is a misread.
I mean the fact that pinging another computer over a crossover ethernet cable with no router between only just gets below 1 ms latency I just don't see it being accurate.
Macbook (2.13 ghz c2d, gb/s ethernet) linked directly to macbook pro (3.06 ghz c2d, gb/s ethernet)
Ping has started…
PING 192.168.0.1 (1.0.0.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 1.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.514 ms
64 bytes from 1.0.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.014 ms
64 bytes from 1.0.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.289 ms
64 bytes from 1.0.0.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.617 ms
64 bytes from 1.0.0.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=64 time=0.255 ms
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 0.014/0.338/0.617/0.211 ms

show me a ping test, and a trace-route to http://www.xilo.net which shows pings anywhere near that low then. if its not a misread they'll get the same results.

no. I mean command line ping from your computer, not through an inaccurate flash web app
