New TiVo User

Hi guys,

Had TiVo installed yesterday after upgrading from V+ and have to say that so far I'm very impressed.

Just have a query in regards to the video output settings. The TiVo automatically set my video output to 720p. My TV is a slightly older HDTV and I believe that the default output is 720p but it is also capable of displaying 1080i.

I have therefore manually set the TiVo video output to 1080i and obviously the first thing I noticed was that the TiVo menus were a lot crisper and vibrant and ESPN HD looked amazing.

However, can anyone advise whether this will be fine leaving it on 1080i or is it better to go with TiVo auto detect and leave it at 720p? Can't think of any reasons why not to but I'm hoping someone slightly more tech savvy can advise whether this will have any negative impact on anything?

Cheers

Re: New TiVo User

Tivo have acknowledged a picture up scaling issue in 'some' circumstances and 'some' people have reported softer picture, the fix should not be far away, albeit this should only affect SD channels and not HD

I've got Philips TV and i can't see any problem with any channel on any setting (in fact cant remember what settings i use) so not sure whether it only affects some sets

I think you should set it on whatever looks best on your TV yourself rather than rely on automatic settings

After they have an update wizz round it again - i will

Change it to 1080i. Like yourself I find that the menus are a lot crisper and vibrant, and HD channels look better than 720p. However, if your box is anything like mine it MAY default back to 720p when your TV is switched off. I've been having this problem since install, though I do think it is more of a HDMI handshake problem between the box and my Sony receiver, so hopefully you will be ok.
