Only if your setup is broken, peer to peer IM transfers usually go at the full upstream speed of your line.

no they don't - trust me. WLM is pants, Skype is just horendous.

AIM sends files P2P; sendfiles to my friends at 620 KB/s

never used AIM, so couldn't vouch for it. of those apps originally listed, you won't get great speeds though.

Give live messenger a try, Ive transferred some very large files and it easily maxes my upload(3meg) but there's no resuming so both ends need stable connections, failing that there's Opera Unite(google it) or dropbox mentioned previously, the last two are free and don't require anything other than a browser on the receivers end.

If you have virgin you could use their free webspace, zip it in to small parts upload the files their, then make a temp page up with all the links to the parts then he can download them when he wants

WLM and Skype both work fine for me too.
