Reduce speed per PC

Hey guys i have quite allot of PC's using the internet at the same time, and i am wondering if there is anyway in the super-hub settings (or by using another program) that i can reduce the speed a PC gets ? or limit it in some way, i know you can turn internet off completely with times and that but that's not what i need.

I would like it something like this

50MB

PC1 - 5mb
PC2 - 5mb
PC3 - 5mb
PC4 - 5mb
PC5 - Unlimited
PC6 - Unlimited
PC7 - Unlimited
Xbox - Unlimited
Wii - Unlimited

and yes i have that many connected at the same time, hammering the connection, you would be surprised how much data is from youtube alone! which is why i need to limit this somehow, as i keep getting these silly letters from VM about detrimental use of internet.

any info anyone can give me would be appreciated, thanks.

There is no way to set this up in the Superhub but a few years ago I came across NetLimiter. Not sure if there is a better tool around but you can give it a try

This bit of software will do what you want http://www.antamediabandwidth.com. Install it on a Windows 2008 Server with 2 nics, routing and remote access, dns & dhcp. One nic conects to your modem the other to your switch and the server will do your routing, bandwidth managment and alot more.

Re: Reduce speed per PC

I use an Asus RT-N16 with Tomato USB firmware. That allows me, via QoS, to group each machines traffic (and also any port/protocol) to one of 10 tiers which can all have their own in/out limits set by a % of your max bandwidth.

It also allows you to keep a track of bandwidth used day by day, though not by machine. You can see the last 24 hours worth of bandwidth by Lan/Wan/Wifi though.

I was just going to suggest that he could also use a router with a dd-wrt Brainslayer special build on it. Allows you to limit bandwidth by MAC. Also lets you set a default rule for any unknown MACs.
Not sure if Tomato offers that as my router is unsupported so never played with it.

To be fair all you've been offered is a bit of advice on basic network set up, if at this level you think its complicated you're better off leaving it lol.

The advice given will give you what you want though.

The QoS on Tomato is pretty powerful. One of its major features.

Can specify the class based on Mac address, Ip address, protocol, port and amount of data transferred (useful to give fast browsing but keeping downloading slow). Have a read of this if you want to get jealous :p

Re: Reduce speed per PC

Have you done your calculations to show that the aggregated amount downloaded in your desired situation will avoid the DULs from VM?

I think you're going a bit over the top with getting the guy to run Windows server and/or flash his Superhub with DD-WRT which you probably know doesn't support custom firmware.

Yes you will need to install NetLimiter each of your machines (1-4). You can install Logmein or Teamviewer on them to access them remotely but I don't think theres a function on NetLimiter to modify values remotely.

we use around 350 gig a month, so far i have had 3 letters, and i received my final one this month, to which i had to sign it and send it back to VM or my internet would be cut off.

I can under stand where VM is coming from to a degree, but there is allot of people living in my house, (6 adults 3 children) so its natural there is going to be allot of usage is it not ? and most of that is not even illegal usage either! that's mostly youtube! then there is steam, its used allot in my house, then there is xbox live game downloads, gametrailers, demos, naturally going to be allot of usage for having as many people connected as i do.

I will buy net-limiter and see how this works out, but i still think its a disgrace that i am having to limit something that i am paying full price for.
