I doubt very much that cleaning will help the NIC issue. If Device Manager shows nothing (try View/Show hidden devices) then the hardware if probably faulty.
You'd need a Cardbus (PCMCIA) network card such as this:

In XP, network icon can be displayed in system tray - Control panel- Network connections - properties tick box to display icon in system tray. This option isn't there in Win7.

OP does make it clear if he is missing this icon or if network device not showing in device manager. Sorry, just read posts again, not showing in device manager mentioned later.

Sorry for being thick but are you complaining about just not having the icon or is it that your wireless network is not working ?

Ahh I see. Well that's by design I'm affriad. Only a 3rd party addon will bring that function back.

Neither actually. His wireless works fine, it's the wired network adaptor that has disappeared.

We still not established if there is an internet connection with the cable connected, just an icon is missing, which does I think if you unplug the ethernet cable.

Hmmm. That's got me thinking. Wakkaday - are there any unknown devices showing in device manager? Anything showing any errors at all?

Re: no "Local area connection" LAN icon...disapeared. Please help?

i hardly use the ethernet socket. im just wondering is there anything else i can do or install? chipset/drivers....

i had a problem with my i.e browser and others finding a net connection, something to do with a proxy server, i checked internet explorer settings (local area connection) and cleared the information from there and deleted avg antivirus and now its working again....

there is nothing in the bios which shows 'onboard lan' to be enabled or disabled.
the driver for the lan says its installed successfully yet doesnt show when i restart.
there is no unknown devices showing in device manager..
i've tried safemode

is it worth buying a usb ethernet socket from ebay for under £3.00 will i get the same speed?

Yes, I know, found the option to see network activity, at a glance, in earlier versions very useful. Pity M$ dropped it.

I've never tried one of those I'm afraid, but for 3 quid I'd give it a try. It's not much to gamble.

Given the Atheros onboard LAN is a gigabit lan card the USB isn't going to come close. As for an addon card, you don't have PCMCIA - yours is an Expresscard/54 slot.
