Compuserve about 1996. When that merged with AOL was just right to change to East Coast Cable.

I remember constantly getting sent CD's from AOL, Freeserve, Yahoo, Compuserve, etc back in the dial up days.

Me too...that was in the days when plastic recycling wasn't done that often...just think about all of the unwanted AOL/Compuserve etc CDs that got chucked away (well the ones I didn't use as coasters anyway )

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it

1996 Virgin net at 1p/min (Dialup) then one of the first to go to Screaming net (Plusnet) as it was the UK's very first flat rate internet solution.

When Broadband became available switched to BT mega fast 512kb/sec stingray ADSL offering, well mega fast compared to dial ups approx 3k/sec rate xD

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it

Force9 (now PlusNet) in 1998. Technically I still have a dial up account with them - just never use it.

Changed to NTL in 2003 as they were offering unlimited dialup and phone for £25 a month.

Their closure led to what I think is my favourite The Register headline (although the article sadly does not appear to be in their archive, so I cannot provide a link). "Currant Bun goes stale, gets thrown in bin".

Actually, I'd forgotten about that. I did dial in to work for a couple of weeks before realising that the 14.4K connection that work offered was a little slower than the 28.8 offered by most ISPs at the time..
