v+ hd box = no service?
I have recently got a v+ hd box, which is lovely and new. I also have the "L" tv package (but no HD). I got the box to record programmes etc – not for HD TV, or the virgin HD service – though I may get this later.
When I connected it last night, with my card nothing happened. I got the generic "Service will start shortly" message but then the screen went black, and nothing happened. I rebooted several times, and still nothing. When I switched back to my old standard Samsung v box it was fine.
I am wondering if you need a HD service to watch anything out of a v+ hd box? As I just can't get any kind of service.

I got the box from a friend. I have a VM subscription (as I say, the "L" package, 100+ channels). Just can't get the box to work?

I hope you didn't pay for it! you've just got a doorstop. You can only get a V+HD box from Virgin Media. You need the box and smartcard matched and the V+ code on your account.
VM will NOT activate this box as it is now stolen property and not your friends to sell or pass on.

It is now just a doorstop as you would have needed to get the box from VM. As you have got he box from a friend the box will not work with your card. Also your friend should keep the box as they will be charged for it if they do not return it to VM.

Out of interest. Is it possible to buy a v+ hd box from VM to get it put onto my account, and not have the v+ hd service (which will mean paying £49 activation and £5 per month on top of my current bill)? Or must I have a V+ hd service in order to use a v+ hd box?

You need to pay £49 for the activation (regardless of HD)and it's £5 pm for the recording facilities if you are not on XL and above. Usual free tech callouts for faults and free faulty box swaps are included of course.
