Dual router set up problem

Hello, i'm having real trouble trying to setup a dual router system. I've tried
Broadcasting the different SSID of both routers
Turning off DHCP in the secondary router
Changing the IP address of both routers so they don't clash
Having the IP of the secondary router within the parameters of the primary router eg: 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.254

XP seems to be OK (apart from having to re-enter the password every time i turn on the laptop)
But Vista laptops keep getting disconnected

By dual router I think you need to explain what layout you are hoping to achieve. Can you list the kit you have, and how you are connecting it all together?

I have a virgin superhub with built in modem and i have added to this a netgear wndr3300 via a ethernet cable both are running 2.4ghz.

How can you have a superhub ip of 192.168.0.1
and another router of 192.168.0.10
the interpretation is identical and therefore you get a clash, which is what i was advised of by the secondary router immediately when i tried to login

I gave the secondary router an ip of 192.168.0.254 which is within the DHCP leasing guideline numbers

Here's hoping.

how would there be a difference between 192.168.0.10 and 192.168.0.254?

Differing final value i think, seems to be working ok so far

If i could have 192.168.1.1 i would but the superhub won't let users adjust the third section only the last, has it defaults to 192.168.0.254 with 253 total allowable users

if you changed the "3rd bit" then you would have exactly the same set up, but with a different number.

if you really want to change the subnet on the superhub, you can, its on a different page to the other IP settings from what I can remember

unless you have 500 devices i wouldnt worry about subnets, you might as well leave it with 1, after all you probably dont have 250 devices?

You can't change the 3rd numbered 'text box'? from a 0 to a 1 because it's greyed out, you can on change the last 'text box' from a 1 up to 254

You are trying to connect to routers in sequence both using the same IP range of 192.168.0.xxx That is inevitably going to cause DNS and other conflicts unless on of the two routers has the DHCP allocation turned off so the other provides everything.

If the netgears WAN port is being attached to a LAN port of the Superhub then I expect you will need the netgear's internal lan IP range allocation to be in a different range to the superhub, say 192.168.1.xxx

The alternative layout would be to turn off DHCP allocation on the netgear, give it a fixed IP of say 192.168.0.50 (an IP that will not have been allocated for any other reason by the superhub, low IPs of 1-10 often have internal network uses, then plug the LAN of the netgear to the LAN of the superhub. But follow the instructions in craig's link above to set the Superhub to not allocate an IP to the netgear, i.e. create a reservation for the netgear's address.

Disclaimer: As I do not have a superhub, I cannot test out any of these potential network layout configurations.

as rob has said you want them on a different subnet. thats why i said that there would be no difference having the IP 192.168.0.10 and having 192.168.0.254 as they are on the same subnet

im going to hook up my superhub now, to see where the setting is to change the subnet

okay, you need to change the subnet of the superhubs IP

once you change the sueprhubs subnet, the DHCP dubnet changes, see:

I use 2 routers, a Netgear plugged into the SACM and a DLink connected via Cat5. Both have the same SSID but different channels. The Dlink is configured as an access point which turns off the firewall, DHCP and the like.

SACM -> WAN port [NETGEAR] LAN port -> WAN port [DLink] LAN port -> PC

Laptops then connect to strongest signal at startup but downside of this setup is they don't change when they move unless the loose the original connection.

The Netgear provides the DHCP service whether connected directly or via DLink and I use the reserve address function to give the DLink an IP outside normal DHCP range.
