Not responding?

I have recently swapped my TVs over and now have an old (but very good ) CRT TV attached to my V+ box rather than my cheap HD TV and had to unplug my V+ box for the swap.
I'm not sure it's relevant but I didn't change the output from HD.
The V+ box is now connected via SCART rather than HDMI but after turning on the V+ box it will change channels about 30 seconds after pressing the button on the remote controle - if I press once it changes one channel, twice, 2 channels etc. But after the initial change the box is completely unresponsive - the remote light flashes but nothing happens. It also does not respond to the controls on the V+ box itself. The only button that works is the standby button.
The V+ box worked fine before I turned it off to change TVs (my HD TV is now with my shiny new Tivo in another room). I have tried more than one remote, no change.

Any ideas?

Thanks for reading.

Re: Not responding?

Are you actually getting a display on your TV? I'd have thought you'd have had to change the output of your V+box

Re: Not responding?

I was surprised as well - but I get a picture, no problem. If I had no picture but rhe display on the box changed I would know what I'd done wrong. Instead it's the other way round which is what's confusing me.

Re: Not responding?

I'd go to settings and change the output to scart anyway. I don't see how that would solve your problem but there maybe something wrong with the scart output that is causing the box to behave oddly. It shouldn't be displaying when it's still set for HD output.... unless your scart cable is in the VCR out socket?

Re: Not responding?

I would if I could, but like I say, nothing works. Not even the buttons on the box which presumably should if it was just a display setting problem?

There are 2 scart sockets on the box - which one is the VCR one?

Re: Not responding?

In the SA it's the bottom one for archiving stuff so your scart should be in the top. I don't know about the samsung.

Re: Not responding?

Hmmm...
Thanks, it was plugged in to the VCR socket and I get no picture when plugged in to the right one.
The remote seemed to be working - then stopped again.
Next step is for me to take my HD TV downstairs again and see if that works but won't do that now until the weekend but at least I have something to go on now.

Thanks

Re: Not responding?

Might be easier to take the V+ upstairs. Change the output settings then bring back down.

Re: Not responding?

It looks like your settings are still for the HDMI mode. If you have now gone back to a CRT TV the box assumes that it is still working in HD.

What you could try is to ring the VM and ask if they could reset your V+ box for 4.3 mode. This mode doesn't use the HDMI function and (in this case) you "should" (touch wood) get your service restored for the CRT service. I've contacted VM several times and had my viewing modes reset remotely without any problems.

There is actually a SCART recognition function within the settings selections, but I guess that this has not been activated as it would be unnecessary with a HDMI connection.

Anyway - give it a try!

Si thee

Re: Not responding?

Thanks - I think my first option is to reconnect my HD TV (I can carry it, unlike my 32" CRT) so will try that on Saturday, failing that, phoning Virgin is another option.

Re: Not responding?

The problem is that the box is still set to HD mode. It isn't necessary to reconnect it to your HDTV to do this. Follow the procedure in the last question here
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/10...855-v-faq.html

And make sure you use the 'TV' SCART socket on the V+

Re: Not responding?

I'm guessing he read this part of the link provided by Spiderplant:

Q: I've set my V+ output to HD, but I don't have an HDTV and now I can't see any pictures
A: (Scientific-Atlanta) Hold in the Stop and Play/Pause buttons on the front panel, and press Reset. Keep Stop and Play/Pause held in until the display says 'boot'. After a few seconds the display should say 'outpt'. Press the Fast Forward button several times until the display says 'Sd', then press OK. Wait for the V+ to reboot then you should be back in SCART mode.

You can also use this method to switch the V+ into HD mode - either select "Hdrni" (HDMI) or "YPbPr" (component) before you press OK. And if you use the Rewind button, you can switch between 720p and 1080i

A nice little nugget of info I wasn't aware of.
