Just doing mine now.

I don't suppose it hurts to do it every now and again.

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?
Just remember to do it via "Home->Help & Settings->Clear or Reset Set Top Box" so that it shuts down cleanly.

Not if you select the first option "Restart the TiVo box".

Yes, don't touch the other options of you're knackered!
You have to do three thumbs down and then press last channel to confirm you want to do anything anyway, so you are pretty safe.

See that surprises me because my installer told me to never use that option because it took 5 hours to come back on. Is that likely because it was an unprepared box they were using at training (ie not fully loaded all the info?).
The second guy who came to replace the first faulty box I had showed me you can do a reboot by holding down the power button till the lights flash then letting go, rather than using the switch - very similar to rebooting the Samsung V+

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?
Tivo is Linux-based and, apparently, re-booting (as well as de-fragging) isn't as necessary on this "superior" (sic) OS

Re: Tivo has just had a update but what update is it?
In general Linux (and other UNIX) kernels are very stable and rarely require rebooting. However, the TiVo UI that sits on top of the kernel could very well benefit from being rebooted every now and then. The kernel can be performing perfectly but if the TiVo software has its knickers in a twist then you're going to see problems.
As for defragging, that depends on what filesystem is in use. Some handle fragmentation better than others. There's also the possible issue of cruft in TiVo's own internal databases. We don't know what (if any) housekeeping is done to keep it in tip-top condition. A poorly maintained database can get very slow.
