Newbie TiVo question

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere...

Just had my TiVo installed this morning and having a bit of a play. When I go to set recordings etc it drops into low res menus and I can't continue watching TV while I do it. Is this correct as it's not what's shown in the manual, that's all shiny and HD with the mini TV window showing.

Have I got a setting wrong, or is this how it is for everyone?

Thanks

Some menus are like that.

Re: Newbie TiVo question

There is nothing wrong, the deeper in to the menus you go it reverts to the SD menu. This is the same as TiVo in the USA.

Hopefully it will get updated but people in the USA have been complaining for a while now and its still not been changed.

Re: Newbie TiVo question

Thanks for the info. Bit of a shame though as you could set recordings while still watching on the V+, hopefully the other benefits will outweigh this.

Re: Newbie TiVo question

Hopefully VM will be able to influence TiVo enough that they will eventually upgrade the final SD screens to HD.

Re: Newbie TiVo question

OK, another question. The Home Screen and My Shows menus have stopped showing the mini TV window now, think it went after I watched something on iPlayer. The guide still does. Any way of getting it back, or is it a reboot job. The installer said in needs 24 hrs to download stuff, is it safe to reboot during that time if that's the only solution?

BF is home soon and he didn't want the TiVo in the first place so could really do without it playing up so soon

If you have been watching a SKY channel and then you go TV guide or anything else it will not show in the mini window. This is all I can think it could be ?

Re: Newbie TiVo question

Another possibility is you have switched the window off. Press the SLOW button to turn it back on.

Thanks spiderplant, I had turned it off - I guess that's probably in the manual I've yet to read...My thumbs are still in V+ mode, so I'm pressing all kinds of buttons at the moment!

Re: Newbie TiVo question

The thing is someway or another, maybe by VM asking them to do so, some things like the guide and the on-screen channel mini-guide and channel "banner" are now in HD on the Virgin TiVo but remain as the old SD versions on the US TiVo Premieres (the box that the Virgin TiVo interface is based on).

It's really puzzling why they can't just design some new menus, it feels like an unfinished product. I hate all the switching between menus, if I'm watching TV and press Home the TV audio blips for a second and it doesn't feel robust.

Here's hoping they'll continue to develop the UI for the VM TiVo and then port that over to the US.

Re: Newbie TiVo question

Think it's been mentioned before, but I am sure the older SD menus are written in a different code or based on the older TiVo and not built on flash like the new stuff. I could be wrong though.

"Just" designing (then implementing and testing) new menus is a huge job. It could have been done but would have delayed release for many months. VM decided (sensibly IMO) to go with what was available. This gives you the choice of taking TiVo with the mix of menus now, or waiting for them to all be converted to HD.

They will.
