It's called having higher population densities and laxer planning rules.
Don't kid yourself into thinking the rural areas in those countries have it any better than we do. You still need to live in a city for high speed services.

They can also string their cables up on poles which is far far cheaper, makes rolling out a network cost a fraction of what it does over here.

In Sweden's case spending lots of that >50% of GDP they take in tax on municipally owned fibre. Japan have better demographics and pole mounted fibre. I wouldn't have any problem with pole mounted fibre but YMMV.

This chappy is getting 100mb for close to £8 a month then about £40 after 1 year. Not bad.

Agreed, that is a shocking price to pay for slightly faster broadband. It's not even necessary. I like how everyone is more in touch with technology to the extent they actually feel embarrassed to be behind the times (antennae's on their roofs!) but I'm more than happy to be behind by a few years if it means we get it put in the ground.

if we had the awesome tech japan had, for instance the FTTH on the picture, but instead it was below ground, it would be pretty awesome

Incredibly expensive too - not conducive with the UK market being largely people who resent paying very much for broadbandings.

I wouldn't have a problem with it either, provided the ISP's utilizing this method actually passed on the savings to their customers.

Instead, i believe they'd just see it as an opportunity to maximize their profits.. Hell, the penny pinchers at VM would probably introduce a pole charge

Pass on what savings?

This isn't about being able to pass on any savings, it merely reduces the cost of rolling out fibre from impossibly expensive to just very expensive.

It's how cheap the services are here that makes the maths so difficult for operators.
