Intorducing a puppy into the house with Darla

A friend has some staffie pups all blue. They are not his and the owner is being difficult but thats irrelevent. I know I can give the dog a good home but I am concerned about Darla possibly infecting the new puppy.

Any advice gratefully accepted because I do not want to risk the health of either dog

lovely puppy zing ,untill the puppy has had the injections then he/she will be at risk ,if your dog is up to date then the risk is lessened but not totaly ,if the puppy is still feeding from the mother and the mother's upto date then the puppy will carry some defence through the milk .My advice would be to make sure that your dog is upto date and keep them both indoors untill the puppy can have the injections ,this will minimize the chance of infections being carried in by Darla

Excellent advice

Also, go for a male if you have a choice. There's is nothing worse than two girl staffies - they'll fight like hell. Also, if Darla still has all her girly bits, get her done to save any accidents and they'll live very happily together and look out for one another. Here is a pic of our three at a family bbq last week, 2 boys and little Holly in the middle

should I get her done soon as or do I let then breed once though? i was told its good to let them breed once?

How do you deal with first meet? is this safe in the home? do I keep them apart for a bit ?

They don't need to breed once, just have one season. We got our King Charles bitch done 2 months after her first season on the vets advice.

If you intend to breed her then obviously let her breed first, but usually after the first season they are safer to be 'done'.

The little one won't be interested in mating with her for a while yet so you'll be ok. He'll just want to play 24/7 and probably tire each other out.

It should be safe enough in the home, let Darla have the upper hand as she's top dog, she'll put him in his place a little but if she gets nasty separate them with a child safety gate. Chances are she'll probably 'mother' him anyway. Just ensure praise is given to both and don't favour one over the other

The 1st meet should always be done at a neutral place then there are no territory ownership issues.

It's always helpful to exercise the puppy 1st so they aint all in the older dogs face jumping around like a loon.

Well Darla has been introduced to the new puppy and mental isnt the word. Fortunatley it wasn't in an agressive way and she was still under voice control. It was a tad scary. The poor puppy was terrified so I am going to gradually increase the time they are together . Darla has had lots of love and praise

Mad few days ahead I think

Just to add , do you have a dog cage .... Very handy indeed , especially with two dogs , we fostered a bitch staffy for a while and was perfect for time outs , if darla not used to one though probably not the best idea but would be perfect for the puppy....
