Zone File
Hi,
I'm trying to obtain a DNS zone file for a customer.
I've tried this in nslookup but it's locked down and not allowing zone transfer info.
How can I get the zone file for a domain?

Re: Zone File
I think you'll need to contact the people responsible for the DNS server.

Easier said than done. Need to find a way to contact them - these people like to hide behind email / web forms - if I can find one!

Re: Zone File
OK - I've found a web form and contatced them but the said they no longer manage the domain. Which is correct becuase it got transfered but the DNS management is still with them. I thought transfering the domain implied that the DNS was was transfered to the new provider as well?

Re: Zone File
Sorry Lee, but that is an common misconception. You need to get to the authoritative DNS server/record keepers.
What does an nslookup bring back? Just a suggestion, as I've been here before, and had a bloody 'mare to be honest.
Good luck mate.

The NS is set to:
ns1.mdnsservice.com
ns2.mdnsservice.com
ns3.mdnsservice.com
...which gets redirected to Tucows.com. I have contacted them and they said "This domain is no longer with Tucows"
But the DNS management still is....

Re: Zone File
You need to find out who the current tag holder is. Unfortunately in many cases getting hold of the person(s) responsible is easier said than done.

Re: Zone File
Like I said, and I know it's no help, but it can be a bloody 'mare.
Best of luck mate.

Re: Zone File
How many different records does the domain have ? - if its only a few then just create them from scratch on the new dns server you intend to use and then repoint the NS records.
