Freeview has its interactive stuff exposed like this and it works well for quickly checking back and forth without having to wait for the slow menu system.

It's not that simple. As TiVo has never had any red button features, TiVo are working with VM and building the red button software from scratch so it will take longer to get running as it needs to be created and then tested before rolling out. Same thing that happened with the third tuner update which just went live.

Then why release it so early in the first place? The Red Button is an essential part of the digital TV experience, without it I wouldn't have been able to watch Chris Moyles' historic marathon record-breaking show for Radio 1. I wouldn't have been able to hear the scores for football matches I will recall for years to come. And I certainly wouldn't have been able to watch exhilirating races on F1.
If TiVo has never had red button, then VM should wait till it has to put it out. We may moan about delays, as I have just, but instead, a later release schedule should have been put out.

In VM's defence Tivo hasn't really been fully released as such. However once it is I agree with you that it should be fully functional, certainly BBC Red Button should at least be available but maybe it will be though. Wait and see.
F1 will certainly benefit from it.

I know they have to develop the software.
But it would be easy for Virgin to just add the video feeds to the EPG as a workaround. They are already there and being broadcast, they just dont appear on the EPG so the box wont see them. Once the red button software is ready, hide them again.

I don't agree with that. If you want the red button, you wait for it to launch on TiVo - simples really

Re: TiVo
Are VM letting it be known publicly that BBC Red Button isn't available yet, I would guess most people would just assume that it would be.
A fair few early adopters didn't seem to be aware.

Yes, it should be in the sales brief.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the sales brief, do you mean the phone call?

I disagree with you!
If you want all the additional function that TiVo brings, get TiVo.
If you want red button support, the existing Virgin Media equipment has that function, so stick with that.
It depends on each individual's requirements what solution you take.

Re: TiVo
Red button is an essential part of UK digital broadcasting, especially BBC and Sky channels. The service is incomplete without it.
I can't say I have seen the sales blurb with it saying there is no red button support?
