I've just inherited a iphone 3g 16gb which has been unlocked by O2. I hoping to drop my Virgin sim in and it all work fine once connected to itunes

I am I being to optimistic?

Are there any settings that I need to play with to ensure the internet connection or the answer phone service work?

thanks

All you should need to do is put your sim in and connect to i-tunes and you should receive the messages for the internet settings.
