Re: TiVo
Maybe I'm missing something, so could someone explain to me why they need reminders when you will be able to record on all three tuners; just set a record, rather than reminder.
To me, the only reason for a reminder on the V+ was to be able to watch a third programme when the other 2 tuners were already recoding. Now, with a recordable third tuner, there's no need for that.

I agree. I only ever used reminders when I had my original non-recordable Sky box.
I guess it's all down to your individual needs, but I have never used reminders on a PVR and with three tuners soon to be activated I don' t see the need for it.

That would imply to me that the TIVO upscaling is inferior to the V+ upscaling at the moment.

Well, that's interesting. I had a Tivo installed on Saturday and my first thought was that the SD picture was significantly softer (ie worse). In my case, this is displayed on a Pioneer PDP5080LX (so, 50" and full HD) via an Onkyo TXSR806 AV amp. I'd consider this fairly good gear, and it yielded a good SD picture from an SA V+.
To cap it off, the engineer doing the install then told me that the old V+ doesn't have upscaling.... It seems to me more like the old V+ had upscaling and the Tivo doesn't!
As for general feelings on Tivo, so far I'm not very impressed. When setting a series link it cuts off the TV picture and sound. When you're setting up a link whilst watching something else (men, multitasking? It happens!) this is annoying - even the missus said so.
Some menus are displayed in a different resolution which is untidy. Also the lack of "i" functionality from the mini-guide is just downright annoying. Finally, and surprisingly, it's no faster (maybe even very slightly slower) than my old SA V+ when changing channel or indeed during general navigation. I think those daft confirm/deny noises will drive me half-mad, but at least you can turn those off
Hopefully these are all things on the "to be fixed" list. Even if they are part of the standard Tivo functionality, they would still be better put back as they were on V+ !
As a side note, I miss the display on the front (displaying either channel number or position within a programme you are playing back) but most devices seem to be removing this. I guess I'm just old-school!

Re: TiVo
We use reminders to automatically switch to the programme we want to sit down together and view while viewing some other garbage on another channel until the correct time

known issue, will be addressed in a future code release. you can press "ok" on any programme and get info, but if it's currently showing then it will take you to that channel instead.

I assume with Tivo the hardrive stops spinning eventually once put into standby? My Samsung box does but my SA box never did.

Re: TiVo
.
Just a though to those moaning about TiVo rollout and software, at least they are better than Sky.
Just how long did it take them to start rollout of anytime+ ?
And now four months down the line and still some are waiting to get the software........
At least Virgin are basically only a couple of months late with a completely resigned box and new EPG......
I know who's doing the best job......

Re: TiVo
In regards to the people who have said that the SD picture is much softer than the older boxes, Can i just ask have you got the TIVO box connected via HDMI as this selects the best video output for you TV.
Or you could try this:
Video Output Format
Your box receives signals in any of five
possible formats – 1080i, 1080p, 720p,
576i and 576p.
If you’re using a HDMI cable to connect
your box to your TV, the box will
automatically set the best video output
format for your TV. You can also set the
output format for your TV by going to
the Video Output Formats screen and
selecting Auto Detect.
You might want to experiment with all the
different video formats that your TV and
the box support. You may find that some
formats are better suited to certain shows
than others.
The Video Output Formats screen
allows you to test and set the video
output format manually. Select Test
Formats and then follow the on screen
prompts to test which formats your
television can display. The supported
formats will be automatically selected
in the list of available video formats.
Just a thought?

Don't think it does, I'm guessing that unlike the V+ it has to be 'ready' to record a lot more due to the Suggestions

That's what Suggestions are - it records them and then you rate them and delete them if you don't want them. It's not set up for you to choose them in advance

Pretty daft idea then if it records junk you don't want. If it recommended before it was on you could choose whether you fancy it or not.
