Superhub, 10mb to 30mb upgrade, usenet woes.

I joined simply to post my woes, i've tried searching the forum for answers and found out that I need to turn some things off with the super(?)hub. Speedtest.net and Pingtest.net both report A*, everything ok.

Now, on my old router/modem config I downloaded at 1.17meg/s consistently. Never a dropped packet or anything. This is, to my understanding, max for 10mb. Now I upgrade, get a super(lol)hub installed and I fluctuate from 300k/s to 2meg/s.

So, the question begs; why? Everything was fine before the modem/router change. I was pretty sure I would at least get a solid download rate, yet it fluctuates massively. I've tried different ports/settings/newsgroup readers... all to no avail.

I guess I still have 28 days to revert back, right?

Are you downloading via SSL? Try the non encrypted access to rule that out.

Shoulda mentioned that, tried with And without ssl. Im confident the problem lies with the superhub, I just have no way to know for sure. If I had my old modem/router I'd use that to be sure. Oh well, back to reliable, solid 10meg it is!

Yeah, I hear ya. I take it the download graph on your news client looks like the Himalayas rather than a constant line at your optimum speed.

What about adjusting your connections. Start low and increment them by one. Just to see what happens.

I don't know if this tool would help.

Log in to the router and disable the IP flood detection and firewall. This should sort out your issues.

Sadly no mate, been there, done that and I'm in the same boat as dogzz. Major fluctuating download speeds.

I've yet to try this on a standard large file to download, to rule out it being uniquely to newsgroups.

In case you are on wireless change the SHub's 802.11 mode to 145.

Try.......

Use ssl and download on Port 443.

Tried ssl on/off, tried either 1 to 20 connections, tried all available ports that giganews allows, tried different clients, tried different usenet servers. I've tried pretty much everything, I'm going to go back to 10meg as I'm guaranteed to max the connection consistently.

After reading everything about superhubs, I'm just really disappointed with virginmedia. There's clearly issues with this hardware and yet your still trying to push this out. Disabling security options is not a fix to the thousands of people with real concerns about a service you provide.

Have you tried turning off the IP Flood detection and firewall? That what a lot of people have tried and its helped them a lot.

Right, I got a vast improvement with the following.

Using Newsleecher, set port to 995 for ssl

Go down to the bottom where the graph is and right click and choose

Setup: Internet Conn. Max Speed and set it to 30Mb.

That became a lot more stable for me and my average download was about 3000 odds.

Many thanks. After toying around, finding an SSL port for giganews i've found what appears to work (basically SSL port 563, 20 connections). I a now have a consistent, solid download speed of 3.65Mb/s. This is perfect.

Now, the question still begs; why? Why have I needed to jump through hoops to get the service I pay for? The hardware is obviously flawed (lets hope the upcoming firmware update helps this) and im sure there's some rather fishy traffic shaping going on with any usenet access. My guess is after using SSL and a random port, they can't shape my **** anymore(?)

Anyways, thanks for the help, I appear to be a once again happy VM customer. Until next time.

The hardware is fine, newsgroups are supposed to be managed during peak times, this has been announced and is well documented.

Bumping this thread. Since my last post i've had solid 3.6Mb/s from usenet. Randomly tonight I have 400k/s. I'll see if tomorrow if it's the same.. is giganews wierd for anyone else at the mo?

Cancel that. Shaping during peak. I can happily handle the peak time shaping, I hope it stays that way!
