Before I upgrade to 30MB: I just want a modem

Hi all,

I'm currently on 20MB with a standard 255 Modem. This has 1 ethernet port which I plug into my own Linux based router and this router gets the public IP address and I do my own NAT / wireless with decent equipment.

Reading up on the 30MB service, the existing modem won't be able to cope and it looks like the replacement VM will provide is a router/wifi access point which I have no interest in what so ever.

Ideally I would just like a new modem, however I presume there is no chance of getting this. Can anyone confirm how many configure options exist to have the 'superhub' working like a modem so I can continue to use my existing setup. I presume it will be possible to turn wireless off? Is there an option to select a device to receive the public address, or at the very least can I port-forward ALL ports to a single machine?

After reading numerous other posts about the 'superhub', and knowing my experience of dealing with VM (it's not good) I'm not sure if I even want to go through the process of upgrading.

Cheers,

I have the Superhub and all I did to use my own router was switch off DHCP on my Edimax router and it is working fine.

That doesn't sound like how I want to have things setup. My router has 2 interfaces, eth0 would connect to the superhub (nothing else connected to the superhub except the coax to VM). eth1 on my router connects to my switch and rest of the network. Turning off DHCP would break the local network.

Re: Before I upgrade to 30MB: I just want a modem

From previous threads there is no capability to turn NAT off on the superhub.. which in essence would turn it purely into modem with a built in switch.

But you can feed your existing switch and remove your existing router/modem, I don't actually see any difference it would cause

We are awaitng a firmware update which will give us the option of switching off the router side but that is still in the pipeline at the moment.

Re: Before I upgrade to 30MB: I just want a modem

Hi, I am in a similar situation (I run a FreeBSD server that does firewalling and NAT for my internal network) and I have the same concerns. Unless there is an option for a transparent connection I guess staying with the current 20Mb service is the only solution. I just hope that the whole network doesn't switch to DOCSIS 3 and I am forced to move in a direction I rather would not.

The lower tiers 20Mb and below will not be going anywhere.

Re: Before I upgrade to 30MB: I just want a modem

The update for the superhub to enable to to use it as just a modem should be arriving in May according to this new post on the official VM forums

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...de/td-p/341483

Quote:
We're currently planning to release the latest SuperHub firmware update, which will include "Bridge Mode" which enables you to use your own router alongside the SuperHub plus with a number of bug fixes, in May. But if you're interested in helping us test this firmware we'll be looking for volunteers from the forum for testing in April.

These dates are only provisional at the moment, but we hope to confirm them in the next few weeks and will update this announcement when we do.

Thanks

Re: Before I upgrade to 30MB: I just want a modem

True, though it doesn't really affect me as I probably won't be needing a Superhub until the middle of next year anyway.

Yes I can if my router only did routing, but it is a server which I use to run web pages etc. from.
