As Ben says, it's the same, but VoD servers are currently being upgraded so you should start to see that message a lot less in the coming weeks.

Ordered tivo the other day, and I've just had my bill come through saying I am £35 in credit... Why have they took the £149 off my normal bill? :S

Unfortunately that's the way it works. Any payments you make go towards the balance of the account immediately.
So the next bill will the higher than it would usually be. So whatever your usual charges were this month, don't spent it!
The total amount taken out over the two bills will be correct

You get your account number and region code as soon as you book your installation, and that's all the info you need to mark yourself as an Existing Customer on the TiVo form.
So it's possible the caller could have been going on that and not yet noticed the pending installation.

It get's taken out after payday so it's all good :-) I'm owed around 50 quid from virgin anyway so hopefully that'll be taken off by then.

I guess this attitude just shows how some VM staff view their customers. If we didn't know already they don't give a toss if you've been a customer for 10 years or just 10 minutes.

Why do people expect some sort of "loyalty bonus" from telecoms & media companies, because you've been with them x years. The whole industry has created it, and quite frankly its ludicrous.
A 10-year old customer's money is the same colour as a 10-minute old customer's money. True you should keep your existing customer's happy so they don't go elsewhere, but by pricing and service level compared to your main competitors. Not by willy-nilly handing out massive retention discounts and bending over backwards to stop people leaving. That just disenfranchises the rest of the customer base, and before you know it everyone thinks they are getting a bad deal.
Do Asda give me my shopping cheaper than other people who shop there because I've been shopping there longer? What about Esso at the petrol station, the local pub, or anywhere else I could mention where I spend money on a regular basis. Of course not. They refine their offering against their competitor to make sure they continue to appeal to me because they know I can easily go elsewhere to spend my money. For some reason telecoms & media companies don't seem to have grasped this, as all they care about are subscriber numbers and "churn", and they'll do anything to keep you there (including practically giving the product away!)

Why not PD83?
It's all the same. Tesco, Boots etc give points away - you get money off your next shop.
Plenty of places do nectar points.
Although I don't agree with VM giving freebies, or huge retention deals - I would like to see more benefits offered for long standing customers. Maybe get a certain percentage off your monthly bill after a qualifying period and gradually increasing to a set maximum?

Because they specifically stated that existing customers would be getting it before new customers.
If the aforementioned post is true, the Tivo calls person new the guy hadn't even had cable installed yet, and bent over backwards to get him one, by giving him a direct # to call.
There are many long term customers who've never called retentions, if it was my company those are the people i'd most like to keep, not the people who constantly phone up for better deals. Loyalty is worth a lot, everyone is rewarding brand loyalty, from telecoms with rewards, to supermarkets with points cards, there is nothing wrong with it.
So yes asda do reward long term customers, and so does my local pub with better service and free crisps

Yes, but that's not the same as discounting. It's an incentive to shop there. Maybe VM giving you a free PPV after spending x-hundred pounds would be a similar comparison.

This is what I don't agree with. Like I said, my money is just as good as yours. All discounting does is keep people "because its cheap", not because it's the best value service they can obtain. Where is the requirement to continue to innovate? The company should want to be the best it can be, and that will be the incentive for the customer - that you have the best value service.

Nothing to suggest (other than 1 rogue post) that's not the case, but what do you class as an existing customer. Does someone installed last week just because TiVo is coming soon still qualify? Or is it only for people who have "shown their loyalty to the commitment"

Said above, I don't see them as the same thing. If Asda charged me a tenner less because I threatened to go to Tesco, then it would be the same thing.

I guess it depends who's doing the rewarding, are TIVO paying for the boxes for the S1 users?
There's nothing wrong with TIVO doing a deal with VM to supply boxes first to their customers if they are paying for it. I'd be less happy if VM we're paying for it as a favour to TIVO though.
Think of it this way ben.. VM decided to reward TIVO customers (who've paid tivo alot of money over the years). But they can't quite find the money, so they take it out of your raise for this year. Now you are grumpy and VM customers get poor service when they phone you up
