Packet Loss on 50mb Connection

Hi All,

Every 7-8 minutes I am getting a block of packet loss across most hops. (Through virgin’s network etc.)

I'm at a loss as to what could be causing this.

Here are my modem stats:

Upstream Power - 43.50

Downstream - -0.45 / -0.35 - /1.09 / 0.49

Here are my speed test results:

Ping test results:

Now as you can see, all of that information points to there being no issue and to having a perfectly stable connection.

Well - this is a screenshot from 60mins of ping plotter to a random server that i have: (the packets drop the same way to any address I’m pinging, so it’s not this specific server)

Now that is pretty much constant, sometimes it'll take a break for an hour or so - but that's what I’ve had non-stop for the last 2/3 weeks. (Since I’ve had my upload increase funnily enough)

I have run a ping plotter from 3 different PC's and I have connected my laptop via Ethernet directly to my modem and I get exactly the same results

It causes me a complete and utter nightmare as we only have a VOIP phone (Vonage), so calls constantly chop and cut off as you'd expect. Gaming is a total no-go – pointless even starting.

I’m resorting to banging my head against a brick wall at the moment, as Virgin will not admit a fault. They cannot find a problem and they will not log a call or raise a fault via any medium (phone/forum). I've posted them the ping plotter stats, I’ve told them what I’ve done to troubleshoot it - but they're not offering any help at all.

Where can i go guys? It's obviously a major problem on their network that is causing me a complete and utter nightmare. Moving is a last resort as we’ll have to get a BT line reinstalled.

Help!

Re: Packet Loss on 50mb Connection

This, funny enough actually looks almost exactly like the problem this user is having here:
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12...onnection.html

In an identically titled thread funny enough :P

I do wonder what on earth is going on here...

Re: Packet Loss on 50mb Connection

I noticed his thread after i'd posted mine - couldn't edit the title though! Whops.

but you're right, both seem identical issues. Seems like there are network issues somewhere...but they're not admitting to it.

Talking Re: Packet Loss on 50mb Connection

Hi there,

+1 ! 50mb Virgin, fine download speeds, regular loss of packets or something going on interupting gaming.

Yep Ive been having the same issue for weeks. I've raged complained, accused housemates of sercretly downloading terrabytes of pron and so on and so on.

I've fiddled with MTU's reset back to defaults, Applied and removed QoS, tried ethernet, the list goes on.

One recent lead i have come across came about when running netanlyzer (http://netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/) a nice bit of kit. Anyway I got this report

"Network buffer measurements (?): Uplink 1300 ms, Downlink 74 ms
We estimate your uplink as having 1300 msec of buffering. This is quite high, and you may experience substantial disruption to your network performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large uploads. With such a buffer, real-time applications such as games or audio chat can work quite poorly when conducting large uploads at the same time.
We estimate your downlink as having 74 msec of buffering. This level may serve well for maximizing speed while minimizing the impact of large transfers on other traffic"

I am lead to believe this large uplink buffer is controlled by Virgin and could be the cause of these jitters, When i started searching for methods of reducing this uplink buffer (to no avail) I found people experiencing a similiar issue to myself in online gaming.

I am no techie, minimal knowledge. But does this sound appropriate?
