Advice Needed On 30mb Upgrade
I am considering upgrading my Virgin Media broadband to the new 30mbs service from my current 20mbs and would appreciate some advice.
At present I have an Ambit E080C013 modem and a D-Link DI-524 802.11g router. The modem is Ethernet connected to the router which in turn is Ethernet connected to my desktop PC. There are also two laptops and a PS3 all connected wirelessly, the wireless cards in the laptops being 802.11b/g.
If I opt for the new service and the super hub which is 802.11N I will no doubt see an improvement in the desktop performance but is there likely to be any difference in the laptops?
To guarantee improved performance on the laptops I would presumably need to purchase wireless N USB adapters for which Virgin is looking for £30 each. Cheaper alternatives are available e.g. D-Link DWA-140 Wireless N USB Adapter for £13.80 from Amazon. Is this likely to be compatible with the super hub?
Turning to the PS3 I understand that the N adapter won’t work with it and that some people have had problems connecting to the super hub. An alternative would seem to be to hard wire the PS3 using home plugs such as Solwise 85Mbps Homeplug Adapter - Twin Pack at £37.99 from Amazon. Would this set up work OK along side the laptops being connected wirelessly to the super hub?
My last alternative would seem to be to do nothing and wait on Virgin rolling out the 30mbs service generally. If I do wait am I going to be able to take advantage of the improved speeds with my present set up?

Re: Advice Needed On 30mb Upgrade
You probably won't see any performance improvement for wireless devices with the Superhub, it may be worse as some users have reported the wireless on it is quite weak.
All wireless N certified equipment should be compatible with each other, including ones for £10 or less off Amazon.
The PS3 won't work with standard N adapters but I don't see the need. Gaming doesn't really use much bandwidth anyway, and G can be more consistent with pings/latency. A wireless bridge will be a cheaper and faster option than homeplugs.
You won't be able to get 30mb if you have an old Ambit modem. You need to get the new Superhub to be able to receive 30mbps service.

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion
I ordered an upgrade from 10m M to 30m online yeterday, got the aknowledgement email a few hours later saying someone would be in touch and have heard nothing since.
How long does it normally take them to get back? Should I ring or do they not want my money?

Strange how it varies - I ordered mine Tuesday morning, superhub arrived just before noon today.

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion
Ok got hub, called up and activated, all connected up ok but i am still on 20mb.
Called technical support, just to make sure i hadn't done anything wrong and he said it just needs time to update.
Have i been told a fib or is is usual to have to wait for the speed upgrade to update, i thought they did it when i called up to activate, which he said they had but it just hadn't updated at their end yet.

It should have done it automatically while on the phone as it activates, so if still the same call technical support but do try the speed test below first after rebooting the modem once again before calling.

It does it on the call as I activated one today and you can see the change on the system plus it should be listed on the account as 30Mb.

Right still 20mb, he said it was on the system as 30mb but i think they sent the wrong config file to the modem ? It still looks like a 20mb config file in the connection status page of the hub, i only know all this from all the helpful people on here ;-)

You will need to call up and they will have to get the right config to your modem, the are UK agents available up to 10pm or you can wait until tomorrow and call as soon after 0800 as possible.

I think is common problem, I was stuck on legacy config until I rang back 2nd time.

Re: [Update] ALL 20>30Mb upgrade discussion
It took me about 10 minutes after the call to get 30Mb
Had to reboot a few times, before it actually downloaded the Config.
You will know once you've got it as the hub resets itself and starts up again.
